hee finde it, when hee went to seeke for the same after the release
of the Generall sequestration, besides hee saith hee hath a certificate
(which was delivered him by command of the Provador) of the receipt
of the said nine bales or parcells into the Alfandego, and another
certificate of all such goods as hee this deponent dispatched thence,
in which last certificate the said bale of fustians (not being dispatched
by this deponent) is not mentioned. And otherwise hee cannot
depose saving that the said bale was there worth (according to the price then this
deponent sold other of the same fustians that came therewith)

before the right worshipfull the Commissioners
appointed in the Portugall businesse
and examined upon certain Interrogatories
saith and deposeth by vertue of his
oath as followeth.

To the first Interrogatorie hee saith and deposeth that hee this deponent
was resident in Lisbone in the yeeres 1649. 1650. 1651 and 1652, in
and during which space hee was imployed and intrusted by diverse
English merchants as their factor, and had greate imployment from
them in the way of factorage, and many and greate quantities of
goods wares and merchandizes and of greate values were sent unto him
by them and intrusted in his hands, and had likewise goods to a
considerable valew for his owne accompt./

To the second and third Interrogatories hee saith that in the yeeres 1650 and 1651
hee this deponent was at Lisbone kept in prison and under restraint
by order of the said king eighteene monethes and upwards, at and
during which time hee had sundrie debts owing unto him (for accompt
of himselfe and imployers) by diverse merchants and others dwelling
in Lisbone and other parts of the king of Portugalls dominion, (but
especially in Lisbone) to the valewe of twenty thousand mil Res or
thereabouts; And that upon this deponents seizure and imprisonment
of this deponents person the said debts and summes were sequestred, and
continued under the said sequestracon about eighteen monethes.
And saith that many
of the debts (which at the time of the first making of the said
sequestration were reputed good) became bad and the persons owing them failed
and became insolvent, and many of them [XXXX XXXXX XXXXX] then that the said sequestration was the cause thereof and all this deponents writings, bookes and
papers being alsoe seized and taken away by the said kings officers, many of his bills for
many of the said debts were embeazeld and lost during this deponents imprisonment, and others
of the said debtors tooke that occasion to [?denie] payment and others died And saith that the Roll
or schedule hereunto annexed and showed unto him at the time of his examination
contayneth

containeth the severall debtors and debts which are become insolvent and bad and the names
of such as have failed and of such as denie payment, and of such whose bills are lost, and the
whole dammadge of the said losse in debts occasioned by the said sequestration, and saith the contents
of the said schedule were and are true, and hee referreth himself thereof, and
deposeth it to be made and taken as part of this his deposition. And saith that the
greatest part of the said debts belonge to this deponents imployers or principalls.
