==Biographical synthesis==
James Baldwin (b. ca. 1601; d. ?). Vintner. Worked as tidesman for the London Customs House.

Resident in the parish of Saint Buttolph Billingsgate in 1657.

==Evidence from High Court of Admiralty==
Fifty-six year old James Baldwin deposed on August 14th 1657 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on a libel in the case of "Davies against Johnson".<ref>[[HCA 13/72 f.104v Annotate|HCA 13/72 f.104v]]</ref>

The case concerned a shipment of printed books from Rotterdam to London which suffered serious water damage. The books were carried on the ship the ''Pleaseure Boate'' (Master: Joost Johnson).

Baldwin stated that he was a "tidesman for the Customs" and had waited on board the ''Pleasure Boate'' when the ship arrived in the Thames. Baldwin stated that he had witnessed the producent, Davies, collect the books and enter the books at the London Customs House for his own account.<ref>[[HCA 13/72 f.105r Annotate|HCA 13/72 f.105r]]</ref>
