MEMORANDUM THAT S:R JONATHAN DAWES knight, late one of the Aldermen of the Citty of London deceased having in his rite time and about five yeares next preceeding his death being then of perfect mind and memory by the name of Jonathan Dawes made his last Will and Testament in writing, and having therein (amongst other things) given and bequeathed the sume of five hundred pounds towards the augmentation of the stocke towards the releife of the Poore Children harboured in Christs Hospitall London, and One Thousand Pounds to be paid into the hands of his brother Thomas Dawes and his son Robert Dawes within Eighteen Months next after his decease to be laid out in the purchase of Lands or Tenemenst both in fee simple of the value of fifty pounds pannm to be setled upon feoffees forever in trust for the purchase of fifty pounds yearly to be distributed amongst the poore people of the parish of Wootten Underedge in the County of Gloucester where he was borne for their succour and releife and having therein made his wife then Ann Dawes, but now Dame Ann Dawes his Executrix which will was written by M:r Henry Mosse of London Scrivener about the time aforesaid and by the said S:r Jonathan Dawes (then Jonathan Dawes) signed and sealed and by him published for his last Will and Testament and was by him left in the hands of the said Henry Mosse where it remained untill Saturday the Thirteenth of Aprill One Thousand Six Hundred Seventy Two, upon which day he the said Henry Mosse being sent for, to come to the said S:r Jonathan, with that will did carry the same unto him, and then speaking with the said S:r Jonathan Dawes he used these or the like words to the said M:r Henry Mosse viz:t

When I made that will (speaking of the Will aforesaid) I had Children which are since dead and I have other children since borne, wherefore I must alter this Will and the said Will being then left with him the said S:r Jonathan by the said Henry Mosse, he the said Henry Mosse departed from him the said S:r Jonathan and that at the premisses upon the said Saturday, the 13:th of Aprill 1672 (at which time the said Dame Alice Dawes was present with the said S:r Jonathan Dawes and Henry Mosse) he the said S:r Jonathan was of perfect mind and memory.

AND THAT the same Saturday The Thirteenth of Aprill 1672 after the said M:r Henry Mosse was gone

HE THE SAID S:R JONATHAN DAWES in the presence and sight of the said Dame Anne his wife did pull off the seale from his said Will and tore off his name which was subscribed thereunto And then used these or the like words in effect viz:t

The will must not stand I doe revoke it And Then further speaking to his said wife and being of pfect mind and memory animo testandi, and with an intent that the said Legacies of five hundred pounds and One Thousand Pounds severally before menconed which had been therein given to the charitable uses aforesaid should stand and be performed used these or the like words to the said Dame Anne his wife viz:t I will have you performe my charity given in this will (speaking of the will aforesaid) and nothing else And that the said Anne afterwards persusing the said will to see what Charity was bequeathed therein found these or words to this effect wrote therein viz:t To augment the stocke for the releife of the Poore Children harboured in Christs Hospitall London I give five hundred pounds And I appoint my executrix (the said Dame Anne being therein named Executrix) within Eighteene Monethes next after my decease to pay into the hands of my brother Thomas Dawes and of his Son Robert Dawes the sume of One Thousand Pounds to be laid out in purchase of Lands or Tenements or both in fee simple of the yearly value of fifty pounds to be setled upon feoffees for ever in Trust for the purchase thereof be yearly distributed unto and amongst the Poore People of the parish of Wootten Underedge in teh County of Gloucester where I was borne, And it was the will and meaning of the said S:r Jonathan Dawes that the said Two Charitable legacies before menconed should be performed and he ordered the said Dame Anne Dawes his wife to see the same paid and performed

Master Henry Mosse and the Lady Dawes being sworne before Doct:r Pinfold and examined by me Master Cottle Xxgister, as by the Registry of this event is to be soon annexed to the Comission
