 Robert Gayer was one of ?five brothers, all merchants (John, Hugh, Robert, Richard, and Humphrey Gayer).  They were the sons of XXX Gayer of Plymouth and XXXX of XXXX.   Hugh and Humphry Gayer died describing themselves in their wills as merchants of Plymouth, whereas Sir John Gayer, Robert Gayer, and Richard Gayer described themselves in their wills as merchants of London.  Frustratingly, no primary evidence has been unearthed regarding any of the brothers' commercial activities and to what extent, if at all, they collaborated.
 Humphrey Gayer nominated a number of merchants as his overseers.  In addition to his two London based brothers, Sir John and Robert Gayer, he nominated "Jonathan Sparke Esq:r Edward Calmadye Esq:r Bartholomew Nicholls and William Geffery Marchants", who were presumably of Plymouth.<ref>PROB 11/201 Russell 58-117 Will of Humphrey Gayer, Merchant of Plymouth, Devon 09 July 1647</ref>
