Apprentice and servant of Horsey downe shipwright John Major.

Resident in 1656 in Horsey dowen in the county of Surrey.

He worked at the key of his master, the shipwright John Major, whose key was "neer the Horsey downe new stair".<ref>[[HCA 13/71 f.138r Annotate|HCA 13/71 f.138r]]</ref>

==Evidence from High Court of Admiralty==
Nineteen year old William Haynes deposed on April 165th 1656 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on a libel in the case of "John Mayor against a certayne lighter called the William and ffrancis whereof william Knight and Company were owners and against the sayd William Knight and company comming in for their interest and against whatsoever persons et cetera".<ref>[[HCA 13/71 f.135r Annotate|HCA 13/71 f.135r]]</ref>

William Haynes stated that the shipwright John Major was hired to repair the lighter the ''William and ffrancis''. "John Mayer did thereupon hire Edward Bigland, William ffurnis. Isaac Meyer, John Priddam, henry Row, Richard Mallet, Thomas Phillips, and a boy, and did employ him this deponent; and his fellow servants William Robinson, and Richard Cooke, to and for the doeing of the sayd repayres."<ref>[[HCA 13/71 f.137v Annotate|HCA 13/71 f.137v]]</ref>

William Haynes attested to the truth of his statement saying "hee knoweth for that he wrought upon the sayd worke with them and from the beginning to the end thereof". In addition to the work done in October and November 1654, William Haynes stated that "he saw some further repaires done to the sayd lighter in or about June 1655. and knoweth that the same did amount to fifteene shillings two pence." Regarding the schedule of costs he added that "the sayd boy was imployed five dayes for the spinning of okam longer than this rendent or the rest of the shippwrights".<ref>[[HCA 13/71 f.138r Annotate|HCA 13/71 f.138r]]</ref>

Regarding wages he stated that "he did worke upon the sayd Lighter three and twenty dayes in October and November aforesayd. and one day in June 1655. aforesayd which he did not for wayges to his owne benefitt, but as servant and apprentice to the sayd John Mayor, who imployed this Rendent ánd the rest as aforesaid."<ref>[[HCA 13/71 f.138r Annotate|HCA 13/71 f.138r]]</ref>
