Maried to Elizabeth Herring, whose brother was Miles Sindercome, who was imprisoned in the Tower of London for alleged complicity in a plot against the Lord Protector. Elisabeth Herring's examination, dated February 14th 1657, is reproduced in Cobbett's Complete Collection of State Trials (Cobbett (1810)). The examination identifies her as "the Wife of William Herring, of the Precinct of St. Catherine', Mariner".<ref>[https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=7rRCAAAAcAAJ&printsec=frontcover&output=reader&hl=en&pg=GBS.PT439 Cobbett's complete collection of State Trials, vol. 5 (London, 1810), pp.859-860]</ref>

William Herring signed his testimony with his full name, whereas his wife attested to her testimony with her marke.
