Transcription

To the Interrogatories in the sd Place. [CENTRE HEADING]

To the 1. and 2. He saith It is unlawfull and prohibited by the Lawes
of Spaine to transport sylver or moneyes from Cadiz or other port
of Spaine without license, And saith that unlicensed sylver seized
in port is lyable to confiscation to the Kings use who is usually very
indulgent in admitting the Owners thereof to compound for it,
and in case the same escape safe out of the Ports and from under
the Power of the Lawes of Spaine the propriety thereof remaynes and
abides fully to all effects in the true Owners thereof. And otherwise
he cannot depose.

Examined upon the sayd allegation.

John Mexia de Herrera of Limma in the
West Indies merchant aged 35 yeares or thereabouts
a witnes sworne and examined deposeth and saith as
followeth.

To the second article of the sayd allegation This deponent saith that he hath knowne
Paulus Cobrisse arlate by correspondencyes with his Agents in Spaine
and the Indies for five yeares last past and upwards, and saith that
for and during that tyme he the sayd Cobrisse hath driven a great
trade in merchandizing betwixt fflanders and Spaine and the [?parts]
arlate, and hath had his Agents and Correspondents att Cadiz and
elsewhere in Spaine to receyve his goods and merchandizes sent thither and to dispose
thereof for his use and Accompt and to make him returnes thereof in
sylver and other goods, And within the sayd tyme by the Acauaintance
and Correspondencyes which this deponent hath had and hath with
the producents factors he knoweth that the producent hath sent diverse
great quanityes of goods and merchandizes to his sayf factors to be by
them disposed of, and returnes thereof to be made to him againe in moneyes
plate and other merchandises. And further he cannot depose.
