MarineLives project launch

MarineLives is a collaborative volunteer driven project. The project started as a spinoff from a National Archives hackathon in early 2012.

We are dedicated to the collaborative transcription, linkage and enrichment of primary manuscripts from the English High Court of Admiralty, 1650-1669 (with some excursions into data from the 1630s and 1640s). The original records are held at the National Archives in Kew.

The project is led and advised by academics and members of the general public.

In the last five years project volunteers have transcribed over five million words and 11,400 pages of Admiralty Court records. Pver 10,000 images are available to compare with the transcribed records.

Finding aids created by volunteers are available on topics as diverse as Slavery, London Hearth Tax, Inventories and London Probate Records.
