Biographical synthesis
Pyetter Paulis (b.ca.1627; d.?). Mariner.
Name rendered in English as "Peter Powles".
Paulis lived in the parish of Saint Catherine near the Tower for two and a half years before his deposition in the High Court of Admiralty in early 1655. He had been born in Dunkirk.[1]
He stated in his deposition that he had been master of the ship the ffortune of the Sea (now called the Post), and that he had bought the ship for its owners Philip Richaut and Company at Ostend in 1651.[2]
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Twenty-eight year old Pyetter Paulis, a Dunkirk born mariner living in the parish of Saint Catherine by the Tower of London, deposed on February 5th 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty. He deposed in the case of "Philipp Richaut and Company for the shipp lately called the ffortune of the sea, and now the Post and her tackle, apparrell and furniture against (BLANK IN MANUSCRIPT) in particular and all others in generall."[3]
