as he sayd to the arlate John Page of Colc … as he sayd to the arlate John Page of Colchester six whereof this deponent<br />
is Collector of the Customes did enter, and allowed him the other four[?e GUTTER]<br />
peices (as is usuall in such cases) for portage. And saith that the sayd<br />
twenty peices of John ffurley and sayd six peices of Page were<br />
entred in the Custome Howse bookes by this deponent as goods<br />
designed to be sent in the sayd Lowes vessell the ''Coronation''<br />
(alias the ''ffortune'' of Ostend Adrian V[?erkinde] Master) to the port<br />
of Roterdam. And the sayd Low sayd he was to carry the sayd<br />
four peices thither likewise. And this deponent beleiveth that<br />
all the sayd peices were laden on board the sayd vessells aććor=<br />
dingly to be att Roterdam delivered to the sayd Agents of the sayd ffurley<br />
and Page, whom this deponent knoweth to be usuall traders<br />
in such kind of merchandize. And further or otherwise<br />
he ćannot depose, saving that the sayd ffurley entred his twenty peices [XX GUTTER]
To the second article of the sayd allegation hee saith that he this deponent did<br />
give the sayd ffurley a Cocquett for his sayd twenty peices of<br />
serges. and gave likewise the sayd Low a cocquett for the<br />
sayd six peices. and a bill of portage for the sayd four peices<br />
which cocquetts and bill he beleiveth the sayd Lowe tooke to sea<br />
with hIm. And he afterwards heard that the sayd Lowes<br />
vessell being mett att sea with the sayd goods by a<br />
private English man of warr was despoyled thereof by<br />
the sayd Man of warr. And otherwise hee ćannot depose.
To the third article hee saith he cannot depose for that hee saw not<br />
the sayd peices, nor knoweth the qualities thereof, but saith that<br />
the usuall rate of mixed serges of twelve pounds weight per<br />
peice is about three pounds ten shillings the first penny.<br />
and white serges are usually sold the first penny att betwixt<br />
four pounds and five pounds per peice. And much after<br />
that rate serges of that nature were sold for att Colchester the<br />
first penny about the latter end of the yeare <u>1653.</u> All which<br />
this deponent hath observed being Collector for the Customes<br />
there as aforesayd. And otherwise he cannot depose
To the 4th article he saith he hath credibly heard that att that tyme such<br />
serges might have bene sold att Roterdam to very good<br />
proffitt. And otherwise he cannot depose.
To the .5th. he saith he hath credibly heard that the arlate Jacob Goodwyn<br />
and Tiddeman were the Imployers of the Mann of warr, which<br />
was sayd to have seized and taken the sayd serges. And otherwise<br />
he cannot depose.
To the sixth article of the sayd allegation This deponent saith, That about a yeare<br />
and halfe agoe as he now remembreth the tyme, he had discourse<br />
with the sayd Goodwin and Tiddeman from and on the behalfe of the<br />
sayd ffurley and Page touching the sayd serges in order to gett some<br />
satisfactionrder to gett some<br />
