Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

Thirty year old Thomas Dawes deposed on December 3rd 1653 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on a libel in the case of "Price against Smith".[4]

Thomas Dawes stated that he was masters mate in the West India Merchant (Master: John Price] on a voyage to Virginia in 1651. John Price was the owner of a one eighth part of the ship. The ship was of the burthen of 120 Tonns. Dawes noted that he knew the people listed in a schedule attached to the libel, who had been hired by John Price at the rates specified. Dawes himself received 24 li for 9 months and 6 dayes wages.[5]

In October 1651, while the West India Merchant was having dives goods laden and already had some passengers in her, she was ordered "to attend upon the ffleet [?for] reducing the Barbathoes", and spent three months in the service of the State. Having been released from the State's service, the West Indi a Merchant proceeded on her merchandising voyage and arrived in Virginia in February 1652, and delivered the goods and passengers taken into her at Southampton. At Virginia she was reladen with tobaccoes, the greater part of them consigned to a Mr Hussy and a Mr Paihorne and other merchants at Southampton.[6]

Thomas Dawes stated that "6 li per month is usually given to masters upon a Virginia voyage". He valued John Price's eighth part of the ship at £70.[7]
