Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

Thomas Roots, a twenty-nine year old porter from the parish of Allhallows the Great, deposed in the High Court of Admiralty on May 15th 1658. He gave his occupation as porter.[1] His precontest, another porter named Bartholomew Cuff, sixty years of age, had similarly given Allhallows the Great as his parish of residence. Cuff had described himself as "porter of the Stillyard", which evidently was also the location of Roots' portering activities.[2]
