By M:r Gerald Aungier[1] y:e 27:th & By an express of my Owne (sent hither from Surr:tt) y:e 29:th passed Month were my last lres furthered towards your reception, which accompanyed y:e Grall Pacquett; since w:n thre hath not occurred heere any thing worth adviseall in generall onely this in pticular, is to acquaint you w:th y:e effects of y:e ?ardenry of y:t desire I have to improve all opportunities to serve you with much utility w:ch is this at pres:t Dom ffrancise de Lima[2] Sig:r Antonio de mello de Cassro[3] & another [2 words in original manuscript] fidalga haveing had a pcell off solor Sappon [could be "Jappon"] Wood lyeing upon theire hands now upwards of a yeare, it was by them offered unto mee ?for sale w:ch knowing it, to bee of an excellent sort transcending y:t of Callicutt, Cochin, Zeilon, Achine, Siam, Etc:a & itts price reasonable viz:tt 61:x:[“x” in original manucript, presumably "ten"]ss y:e Candy of this place, I adventured on it, & allready paid downe upon it 2000:x:ss y:e whole quantity amounting to a bout 300: Cands, besides 100: Candys more of Dom francisco de Lima who desires y:t hy may accompany y:e Rest wheresoever it is sent without altering its property, though hee would have it done in our names, in regard of enemyes; when I first went á bout this affaire, I had an especiall regard & respect uppon yourselfe, resolveing to make y:e offer of this my Laboure to yo:r acceptance which I heere, most really & Cordially doo, for to make w:t shares of Divid:h as you shall Conclude best & unto whome, It being my desire y:t M:r Jn:o Lamton[4] & M:r Aungier may have a proportion aloted to each of them, the doo I humbly beseech y:t my share may bee y:e largest next to y:t w:ch you shall bee pleased to take to your selfe, by reason of y:e paines I have taken heere in it will stand us in xxxp 3 5/9 y:e m:d Surr:t in Cladding Custome & Charges heere untill on board shipp; if y:e Candee yeilds us but 14: M:ds w:ch doubtlesse it will doo, sxxxxx y:t á Candy of popy: produceth 13 ½ M:ds Surr:tt.

ZeXX bought most of y:t w:ch came from Siam upon y:e Hopewell at A bout y:e same price y:t this Cost if I am not mistaken; w:ch is á sort much inferiour to this, (for this yeild seaven Tyntures or Dyes viz:tt 3 Principall, & 4: Indifferent Goodness, used both by Chinsors [OR, "Chintsors"] , & Dyers) yett hee gained C:o p. Cont:o; Heere as was formerly advised you in y:e Generall) some Cashia lignum to bee had in Towne w:ch will serve for psia though it would not for Eng:d w:ch I hopeI may Bring downe to 14: or 15:x:es Quint alsoe thereis a Considerable Quantity of pepp: soo y:t if you are pleased to approve of this my service, & y:t you Conceive these Comoditoes will turne to most advantage in psia, you may then send mee á shipp to Lade heere w:ch shall S:r (bee Confid:t) beesstowee to most

advantage as alsoe of speed, y:t if possible wee may receave our returne y:s yeare from psia; But & y:t you finde y:t Sappan wood will prove more Benefitiall by sending it to you to Surrattl of Scindy, (at w:ch) latter place I am Certaine it used to beesould at very good Rates I shall then according to yo:r advice regulate myselfe, I shall effect here to satisfye for 100: Candies of sappan wood, & shall not want to finde as much as you shall proportion out for mee in Pepp & Cashia Lagnum therefore for w:t will remaine to make up y:e Rest of y:e Cargo in case you resolve a vessell for psia or otherwise I doe beseech you to send in Rupees w:ch are worth heere 6½ ?tangres P Rep:e or alsoe lres of Cred:t upon Sig:r Jo:r De Prado[5] or Dom ffrancisco de Lima but wrather upon y.e former, I shall not need to make any further enlargem:t upon this subject, hopeing y:t w:t hath allready beene saide of it, will not onely bee by you approved of, But likewise my service accepted Kindely by you.

Of Late & allmost ever since my Coming to this Citty I have as these voyadged towards you Could Informe you bin very Ill y:t I could not enter into a Course phisique, But heaveing now gathered á little strength, my Phisitians Resolve to take mee in hand speedily they makeing noo Doubt (though some of them Conclude me in a deepe Consumption) But to recover nee & make mee as well as ever I was in my Life.

M:r Bendysh[6] who presents you w:th his Humble service is in very good health whoos Company is at present á great Comfort to mee hee Continewes practizeing his writeing, & I am resolved to take some paines w:th him in showing him how to keepe Merch:ts acco:ts, & y:e Almighty haveing restored mee to my Condition, wee Both resolve to hasten w:th y:e most of Speed to ?receave yo:r Commands in y:d interime I Comend my ?Wyffe to your Courteous Care, & humbly kisse yo:r hands & soo remaine
