Abstract & context

Richard Ball was in Goa, from where he wrote to Sir George Oxenden on March 25th 1664.

He was short of money, and was not prepared to use his own funds to travel by land, whilst also being worried about being taken prisoner by Sevajee. He has resolved to stay in Goa to await a ship to take him to Surat, and hopes this will be the cheaper option.

He was concerned that in recent letters from Sir George Oxenden to Carwar there was no mention of Ball and his future.

I have not anything of y:e Hono:ble Comp:a in my possession to defray my Charges, & to Come upon my own Expences will verys much exhaust y:t small stock I have & make mee Liable, should I not have supplyes from my ffater, (as I am not shurr off) to take up money, to carry mee home y:e next yeare as I intend god willing.
