Transcription

Thomas and Lucie and hee hath heard them acknowledge themselves soe to bee
and saith that during the sayd tyme the arlate William Maples was commonly
reputed master of her by their appointment, and of his this deponents knowledge
did take upon him the Care and Comand of her and goe Master of her
the voyage in question and as Master of her did in the behalfe of the sayd Owners
hyre this deponent and others of the sayd shipps company to goe in her the voyage in
question And further saving his following deposition hee cannot depose/

To the second and third articles of the sayd libell hee saith that in the latter end of
may or beginning of June last past the sayd William Maples as master of the saud
shipp did hyre this deponent and his contest Richard Vaughan and agreed with
them to pay them each of them thirty five shillings a moneth to serve in the sayd
shipp the voyage in question and that they should enter in to whole pay at such tyme
as the sayd shipp sett sayle from Gravesend to prosecute her sayd voyage, which
happened to be the tenth day of June last, and saith the sayd voyage was
designed to be made from London to Newfound land there to take in ffish
and from thence to sayle therewith to Naples and from thence to Lepro there to lade
fruite and soe returne for England and this deponent and his precontest Richard
Vaughan, and all the persons in the schedule arlate named videlicet John Lewis who
was Cooke John Tapley who was Chirurgion Peter Bartlet who was Carpenter
William Wood who was Gunner, William hamblin who was boatswaine Thomas
dunstan who was quarter Master, William dudgin Roger Goodman and William
Basey foremast men of the sayd shipp Thomas and Lucie and others of the sayd shipps
company not named in the sayd schule did goe and proceede on the sayd voyage in
manner as is hereafter declared and entered all of them into full pay for the
sayd voyage the sayd 10th of June, except the sayd Bartlett the Carpenter who
as he hath heard and beleeveth entered into full pay half a month before the saud
tenth of June last And saith the sayd shipp did on the sayd tenth of June last
with her sayd Master and Company sett sayle from Gravesend and safely arived
at Newfound land and there tooke in her ladeing of ffish and the same being
soe laded on board her the sayd shipp and her sayd Company did by order of
the sayd Maples the Master depart there with from Newfound land towards
Naples but saith by reason hee was not privie to the contract made by the sayd
master with any of the persons named in the sayd schedule when hee hyred them
hee knoweth not positively to depose what monthly wages hee agreed with them
for but knoweth the rates set downe in the sayd schedule were the ususall rates
then given to persons goeing for such voyages as the voyage in question and in the like
qualities and places of imployment as the sayd persons schedulated did in the shipp
Thomas and Lucie And further saving his subsequent depositions hee cannot
depose./

To the 4th 5th 6th and 7th articles of the libell hee saith the sayd shipp Thomas and
Lucie in her course from Newfound land towards Naples mett with a very
violent storme by the ,eere violence whereof the sayd shipp Thomas and Lucie
spent the mizen mast and foretopp mast and her master and company for the better
preserving their lives togeather with the sayd shipp and ladeing were forced to cut
downe their mayne mast by the board and heave over board all or the greatest
part of the fish belonging to the sayd shipps Company as their adventure, and some
of the fish belonging to the Merchants, but the storme continueing, the sayd shipp by reason
thereof grow very leakie and received in much water on board her which not
withsatnding her company by their great paines and Industrie with continuall
pumpeing cleered her of, and preserved her from sinkeing, and the storme being
over made her reasonable tight. and soe shee continue, and then the sayd shipps
company being desyrous to prosecute their sayd voyage did make a Jury mast
of a space mayne top mast they had remayning aboard the sayd shipp instead
of their mayne mast which was cut downe by the board as aforesayd, and
