and others to stay on board for endeavour the preservation of her and
if they could preserve her to carry her to the first first port they could
make or to that effect in obedience to which command the sayd Gough
as Commander and this deponent and the sayd 45 men of the Lyon's company
did staye on board though with great hazard of their lives and with
continuall labour of two hand pumps continually goeing and divers
bayling water continually with bucketts ad belye of a spritsayle
they had of the Lyon which they made serve for a foresayle for the shipp
Interrogate he at length brought her to Briegsham Key in Tourbay
which was the first port they could make the winde blowing hard to the
Southwards shere after she was arrived her leakes were stopped.
And this deponent there left her being ordered by the vice Admiral
to returne to his ship Lyon which hee accordingly did And therefore
cannot further answere to this Interrogatorrie.
To the second Interrogatorie he there was no living thing aboard the sayd
shipp when shee was soe found driving as aforesayd save a dogg
and catts and suchlike vermin and saith shee had then aboard for a and
some bread which was all spoiled with wett received as touching upon
condicion the vessel itselfe was then in hee hath answered to it before
for much as hee can And further hee cannot answere/
To the third hee saith hee knoweth not the name of the shipp Interrogate nor
who had bin Master of her nor whence she came, but conceiveth by her
lading shee came from Greenland, nor knoweth hee whether shee was
bound And further to this interrogatorie he cannot answere/
To the 4th hee saith that when the shipps the Lyon was a great distance
off there were fower or five shipps neere the shipp interrogate but
made away from her as the Lyon drewe neerer but whether they were
of the Company of the sayd shipp hee knoweth not but believeth
rather they were some that had bin in fight with her and had taken
away her men and were plundering of her and seeing the Lyon come
made away And further hee cannot to this Interrogatorie depose
saving hee saith hee heard his contest John Gough who went in the
shipp Interrogate to dartmouth and there delivered her ladeing saye and
affirme that they were at sea in Company of the shipp Interrogate
before she was found driveing in the manner aforesayd and that
they knew shee did belong to Frenchmen./
To the 5th Interrogatorie hee saith the shipp Interrogate is as this deponent judges
by her mould and shape flemish built, and saith there is a picture on her
shewne but what the same is he remembreth not. And saith [??? GUTTER]
knoweth of any writing whatsoever found aboard her and
further to this Interrogatorie hee cannot answere./
To the last hee saith hee believeth the shipp Interrogate had bin
in fight with some other ship or shipps not longe before shee was found
