1. sayd shipp did happen in this deponents judgement and as he verily beleeveth
2. through the ignorance or neglect, or alsoe through the mates and TO DO: persoxx
3. nos of him the sayd James Waring; which he deposeth for that he TO DO: saith
4. the sayd dammage so done and same and knoweth the quality of the goods so
5. dammified and if well assured that the said pilot had be done his duty might
6. have pererused the sayd dammage, by putting into the Channell ˹in the goods˺ TO DO: since
7. forwarding XXX ˹well˺ for that purpose att that tyme, and another shipp which TO DO: XX
8. was a head of the Exchange did safely putt into the channell att that
9. tyme, and escaped that danger which the Exchange by not altering
10. her course rann into; And otherwise he cannot depose.

11. To the 8th article he cannot depose.

12. To the 9th he saith he referres himselfe to the Acts and words of the Court.

13. To the 10th he saith the sayd Waring y generally reputed to be an
14. Englishman and subject to the jurisdiction of this court

To the last he saith his foregoeing deposition is true.

To the Crosse Interrogatories [CENTRE HEADING]

17. To the 1st Interrogatories he saith that the sayd James Warren hath had the repute
18. of a sufficient pilot to conduct a shipp out of this River into the downes
19. and accordingly hath pilotted seuverall shipps as that Rendent hath heard
20. And further having not had any personall knowledge of the sayd Warren
21. as Experience of his pilotting before the voyage in question he cannot
22. answer

23. To the second Interrogatorie he saith the said James Warren did pilot the said shipp
24. and brought her safely to Gravesend, and she was thene cleaned upon a
25. Saturday, and the same Saturday might as he now remembreth or the next
26. morning she was unmoved in order to fall downe to the Hope. And att that
27. tyme the wind was very high, howbeit other shipps as well of the Exchange
28. then likewise departed from Gravesend, and the said Warren pilotted the
29. Exchange into the Hope without difficulty so farr as this Rondent
30. observed. And further knowing nothing of the interrogat passages
31. betwixt the sayd Wilkinson and Warren, he cannot depose.

32. To the third Interrogatorie he saith that the shipp Exchange was of about two
33. hundred tonnes burthen and twenty fourmen are a competent number
34. to sayle such a shipp upon such a voyage as was then intended and
35. that there were twenty four men as mainers in the sayd shipp Exchange
36. the tyme in question, besides two boyes all being of her company. And TO DO: XX
37. otherwise not remembering to have heard the sayd Warren so have complTO DO: ained
38. of lack of men, or that the said Wilkinson threatened him with making for TO DO: forgXXX
39. ing to make a mating or any thing to that purpose, or of any importing
40. or force used to the said Warren to sayle out of the Hope, he saith TO DO: heXX
41. cannot answere.

42. To the 4th Interrogatorie he saith that the sayd shipp being upon her sayd voyage
43. departed from the Hope (to the best of his remembrence) upon a Sunday morning
44. next after the fore mentioned Saturday, and sayling by the Redsand TO DO: were
45. over the fflatts that morning, and att that tyme there blew a very strong
46. wind from the north west and by west, but the sayd shipp came not to the TO DO: XX
47. narrow nor did edge in as is pretended by this Interrogatorie, but ćame noone
48. to the woolpack which is out of the narrow, and thene struck and left TO DO: her
49. rudder, after the losse whereof the said shipp XX boat over that sand
50. and then left anchor but not lyeing safely thene, but still boatting upon
51. another saw the cables were of necessity to be cutt, and so the shipp TO DO: XX
52. over that other sands; and he saith it is true that the said Warren did strane TO DO: XXX
53. South East for the Redsand, and did afterwards and after that he TO DO: had
54. mist or left his course to the narrow whither he should have gone,TO DO: endeavoured
55. To edge into the shoare South East and by south but that endeavour be TO DO: XX
