Transcription

1. A yeare since here in London meeting with the said Tiddiman at the kings
2. head taverne in Saint Clements lane, and acquainted him with the order which hee
3. had to demand the said serges of him and company, and soe they falling to
4. treate further of the matter the said tiddiman at length treated of composing
5. the said matter difference by payment of money, and would have given fiftie
6. or three score pounds to have an absolute discharge from the same but this
7. deponent insisting on a greater summe they broke off. And saith that
8. either the said Jacobs or the said Goodwin were then and there present ˹alsoe˺ with
9. the said Mr Tiddiman, but which of the two hee remembreth not. And
10. others hee cannot depose.

To the Interrogatories [CENTRE HEADING]

13. To the first, second and third hee answereth that hee did not know
14. Tiddiman before the time predeposed nor remembreth hee hath seene but
15. hath severall times seene him since, and then had doth scarse know either the
16. said Jacobs or Goodwin, but is well assured that and of them was present
17. with the said Tiddiman the time and place aforesaid, because they XXXXX
18. the said such person at was soe with him XXXXX ˹treated of˺ the said businesse as
19. ˹being himselfe ˺ concerned as ˹partner therein with Mr Tiddiman˺ as an Adventurer, and as being one of the said three
20. And saith this deponent hath was noe share or interest in the said businesse
21. nor doth hee knowe derrick Swine, And otherwise hee cannot answereth

Examined upon certayne Interrogatories

John Temant of Kirkawldy in Scotland Mariner Master
of the sayd shipp the Union of Leith aged 32 years or there
abouts a wittnes sworne and examined saith and deposeth as followeth videlicet

34. To the first hee saith hee well knew the Vessell the Union Interrogate and was Master
35. of her at the tyme of her seizure hereafter specified And that hee alsoe well knew
36. the vessell of Warr xx Interrogate belonging to Rotterdam the Commander whereof
37. was the Interrogate Captaine Kirkoff and saith the sayd vessell of warr carried eight
38. gunnes of fifty men or thereabouts and was about the beginning of March 1655 ˹English style˺ in the
39. River of fforth neere Boraston in Scotland whether hee came as Convoy to severall
40. shipps from Rotterdam to the sayd place and X and saith that the sayd Kirrokiff while hee
41. see lay there did give notice by letter to masters of shipps in generall upon the sayd
42. coast (saith of them to show it to others) that hee was bound for Rotterdam and would
43. accept under his convey all shipps thereabouts that had occasion to goe for holland and
44. service them in their voyage thither from the danger of all men of warr or to that
45. effect which letter was communicated and showne to this deponent by one Robert Canwell
46. master of a shipp belonging to leith And further to this interrogatories hee cannot
47. answere./

48. To the 2 interrogatories hee saith that upon the nynth of march xx 1655 English Style
49. some shipps goeing out of the River of forth to sea this deponent thought that one
50. of them was the sayd Holland man of warr who had undertaken to hee a convoy as
51. aforesayd and thereupon this deponent with his shipp the union made sayle the same day
52. after them and upon the 10th day of the sayd month being gott out to sea and being
53. come neere b the sayd Holland man of warr the sayd Kirrkiffe the commander
54. of her haled the union aforesayd and asked this deponent whence hee and this shipp
55. now and whether bound whereto this deponent replyes XXX his shipp union was of
Leith
