Walter Elton of Ratcliffe sailor aged 26 yeares or thereabouts
sworne and examined as aforesaid.
5. To the first and second ˹and third˺ Interrogatories hee saith and deposeth that
6. hee well knew and was boatswaine of her the shipp the Anne
7. of London interrogated (whereof John Casey was master) in her
8. last voyage, wherein hee saith shee went from London to Ginney
9. and there tooke in Negros and a few Elephants teeth, and carried
10. the same to Virginia and there delivered by said Elephants teeth
11. Negros, and at Virginia hee saith hee tooke in sixtie three
12. hogsheads or there abouts of tobaccoe to be brought to this port for
13. the account of the producent Samuel harwar, who had alsoe
14. a quarter part in the said Elephants teeth which were above six
15. or seven and twenty and were alsoe brought in the said shipp from
16. Virginia for this port. and saith then in the said shipps
17. homewards course from virginia for this port, shee was by
18. contary windes put into Plimouth, where shee ly about a fortnight
19. and then namely on the thirteenth of March last rann thense for
20. London the port of her discharge, and brought all the said tobaccoes
21. and teeth thense in her nothing being taken out or diminished
22. thereof during her aboarde there #
- and also brought thense about two hundred hogsheads of tobaccoe for account of other men than the said harwar which
25. were also laden at Virginia
27. and further that in her
28. passage from Plimouth for London, namely as the fifteenth
29. day of the said moneth of March last off Portland shee was
30. met with and set upon by a Dunquirk man of warr who
31. to laid her aboard, and was put off againe by her, and
32. with that after they had continued given each other abroada
33. side, and had continued above an houre in fight wherein the
34. Annes master was slaine, the man of warrs company tost in a
35. granada into her, which comming in at her quarter port and
36. taking in her powder, blew her up and Jewes men and ˹a˺ women
37. then were in her, in who perished thereby, and many of her
38. company (whereof this deponent was one) were wounded and
39. hurt, and saith that be the said shipp and all the foresaid
40. sixtie three hogsheads of tobaccoe ˹and the rest of the tobaccoe laden at virginia˺ were utterly destroied
41. and lost without any part either of shipp or goods being
42. saved either for mr harwar or any other, which hee
43. seeing the premisses soe donne and happen. And otherwise
44. cannot depose, saving the said sixtie three hogsheads of tobaccoe
45. at Virginia laden by mr Thomas Bowler a marchant there for mr harwars account
46. To the fourth hee saith the said mr Samuel harwar both at
47. the time of the said shipps comming to and being at Plimouth
48. and when shee was soe destroid as aforesaid had a quarter part
49. of her and of her tackle, apparrell, and furniture belonging
50. unto him selfe, as owner of the said part, andfor owner of
51. a quarter part of her hee was commonly accounted, and contributed
