1. and (the Corne being in ladeing) hee this deponent heard the say
2. Captaine seuerall tymes ˹openly upon the deck before this deponent and others of the shipps company˺ aske the sayd Whitfeild whether hee had
3. bin carefull to provide goods dennage for the sayd Corne and to make
4. the bulke heads firme whereto the sayd Whitfeild answered and
5. saye if warrant to all is well and as it should bee, or to that
6. effect, And saith that not withstanding the often charge thereof given him
7. by the sayd Captaine the sayd Whitfeild did neglect to make good
8. dennage for the sayd Corne and to make the bulke heads tight by
9. meanes whereof the Corne rann downe night and day into the
10. bottmoes of the pumpes and often choaked them soe that the corne
11. was much of it wasted many ˹buchen XXX˺ payles full thereof being ˹at seuerall tymes˺ taken from
12. out the bottomes of the pumpes when they were choaked therewith ˹was for want of such water XXXXX it there was or aboard˺ and
13. the corne ˹remayning˺ thereby alsoe much dammified ˹by wett˺ by reason the pumpes were
14. so often choaked but what the Owners deduced out of the frieght
15. for dammage thereof hee knoweth not And further cannot depose
16. To the 6th hee saith hee being steward of the Negor and having
17. the shipps provisions of the sayd shipp committed to his custody
18. knoweth that that the sayd Whitfeild did purlogne three peeces
19. of porke of the shipps provision, and that search being made for the
20. same the same was by Captaine Lockier found in the sayd Whitfeilds
21. Cabbing And saith that an other tyme this deponent having delivered
22. wyne stockfish to the Cooke ˹to bee dressed˺ for the provision of the shipp ˹X ten day˺ the same
23. were purlogned away and being missed XXXXXX XXXXXX, they
24. were afterwards found to be purlognedd by the sayd Whitfeild
25. and by him conveyed on shoare at the Islands of St Christopher a house to
26. which the sayd Whitfeild used to reserte and goe to have his linnens
27. washed and upon other occasions, And hee alsoe saith hee sawe
28. the arlate Edwards once broake open the hatches of the shipp the
29. Negroe and hath knoweth they have XXX seuerall other tymes
30. XXXX open this deponent reproceing him for the doeing the
31. sayd Edwards answered and sayd hee would doe it and hee
32. would answere it or words to the effect but for hee had some
33. friends come on board and hee would goe downe to gett wine
34. for them or words to that effect, and the sayd Edwards hath seuerall
35. tymes beaten this deponent (being steward) for on shipp board
36. for ˹endeavouring to˺ hindering him the sayd Edwards from purlogning wine
37. and other provisions of the sayd shipp in the night tyme, And
38. this hee saith is as and is notorious and knowne to seuerall of the sayd
39. shipps company And further hee cannot depose

40. To the 7th hee saith saving his foregoeing deposition hee cannot
41. more fully depose thereto.

42. To the 8th hee saith hee heard the sayd Edwards confesse that hee had
43. some pipe staves laden aboard the sayd shipp at New England and that
44. they were transported for his Accompt to the Mederas but the number of
45. pipe staves or what hee was to pay for ˹the freight of˺ hee knoweth not and saith the
46. sayd Edwards had alsoe at the XXXX ˹Maderas˺ sume wines (but the quantitie hee
47. knoweth not) laden aboard the sayd shipp for his accompt, which were
transported
