1. The 29th of August 1654.
2. <margin value="Left">On the behalfe of Joseph Dobbins}
3. touching three chests of sugar by}
4. him claimed in the Barnstable merchant}</margin>
5. George Clarke of London Merchant aged 28 yeares
6. or thereabouts, and John Daniel of London mariner
7. aged 43 yeares or thereabouts sworne before the
8. right worshippfull the Commissioners in the Portugall businesse
9. sayd and depose by vertue of the ir oathes.

11. That they are well knowe Richard Lowes of Lisbone an Englishman ˹marchant˺, and
12. are very well acquainted with his hand writing having severall times
13. seene him write, and seene many of his writings at Lisbone and
14. elsewhere, and having nowe seene two lettres subscribed with his name, the
15. one dated at Lisbone the 17th of May 1650 and the other the 12th of
16. September 1651, they say they verily beleeve, and are aswell assured
17. as of any thing that they did not set ˹downe˺ that the said two lettres and such
18. subscriptions of his name were and are the very hand writing
19. of the said Richard Lewes.

30. 40 yeeres or thereabouts sworne
31. before the right worshippfull the Commissioners
32. appointed in the Portugall businesse
33. saith and deposeth as followeth videlicet

35. That having nowe seene a paper beginning thus, The claime of Allen
36. Reynardson etcetera and ending 1390 X000, hee saith that the persons ˹marchants˺
37. trading to Porto (being English marchants) have so soffered losse upon
38. peeces of eight of PXXX to the valew of seaven hundred and fourtie
39. mil Rés or a little more or lesse, being made uncurrant by the kings
40. proclamation before the restitution of their moneys which hee had received
41. And alsoe that the said marchants have disbursed in chardges about
42. with drawing the sequestration and receaceing their said moneys the summe
43. of six hundred mil Rés and upwards, which hee knoweth to be true
44. because thee this deponent was there present and assisted in making
45. up the accompte touching the fore said dammadges and chardges, and
46. this hee saith was in the yeare 1652 or thereabouts.
