Transcription

1. To the 4th hee saith hee knoweth by reason hee came from England in the shipp
2. Anne Pearcie in Company of the Eastland Merchant XXXXXXX XXXX that
3. shee had twenty gunnes and was a strong stowte shipp of the burthen of two hundred
4. and fifty tonnes or thereabouts but the value of her and her gunnes and provisions
5. hee knoweth not but siath it was a very considerable summe nor knoweth the
6. quantities or particulars of her ladeing saving hee knoweth there was flaxe in her
7. for that hee sawe some brought from on board her and put aboard the Spanish
8. Admiralls shipp wherein hee this deponent was a prisoner And further
9. cannot depose./

10. To the 5th hee cannot depose

11. To the 6th and the schedule therein mentioned hee saith that hee beleeveth the
12. know divers of the Company of the Eastland Marchant as namely Wellers
13. and Cox and Shau and Temple and Milborne and others in the sayd schedule
14. named and beleeveth that the sayd schedule doth conteyne the names of all the
15. sayd shipps Company And further hee cannot depose./
16. To the last hee saith his foregoeing deposition is true./

Lewes Cox of Wapping in the parish of Whitechappell and County
24. of Middlesex Mariner Masters Mate of the Eastland Marchant
25. the voyage in question aged thirty two yeares or thereabouts a
26. wittnesse sworne and examined saith and deposeth as followeth videlicet

27. To the first article hee saith that in the moneths and tyme arlate in the yeare 1657
28. the arlate John Smithier John Rivett Thomas Tayler and Company all Subiects
29. of this Commonwealth of England were the true and lawfull Owners and
30. proprietors of the arlate shipp the Eastland Merchant and her tackle Apparell
31. and furniture and for such commonly reputed ths hee knoweth goeing Masters Mate
32. of the sayd shipp the voyage in question./

33. To the second and third article of the sayd allegation hee saith that hee this depo=
34. nent being Masters Mate of the Eastland Merchant well knoweth that upon
35. the fifth day of June one thousand sixe hundred fifty seaven the sayd shipp was
36. and remayned in the port of Bickery arlate, And saith that hee this deponent
37. was XXXXX that day on shoare at or neere the Castle of Bickery and X
38. continued there on shoare untill after the sayd shipp was seized And saith
39. that hee standing on shoare did on the sayd sixth day of June last in the morning
40. see the Pinke and Potash of Ligorne under the Command of the arlate
41. Captaine Cardis (being assistant alsoe in the action with five sayle of Spanish
42. men of warr) fight with and fyre severall gunnes against the sayd shipp
43. the Eastland Merchant who made what resistance shee could against the sayd
44. Pinke and Potash and alsoe against the Spanish men of warr aforesayd but in time
45. shee was about nyne a Clocke that morning overppwered and seized by the
46. sayd Cardis and his Company of the sayd Pinke and Potash and the companyes
47. of the said Spanish men of warr X and shee and her tackle and furniture and
48. the goods and Marchandizes aboard her ,(which were of great value) and alsoe the
49. Clothes Instruments and Adventures which the Master and Mariners had on board
her
