1. howbeit hee saith the said Master how refused to help to save or protest
2. the said shipp and lading from the countrey people who were by this
3. time come downe in greate numbers. And otherwise hee cannot depose.
4. To the fifth hee saith that the said countrey people who were soe in
5. greate number come thither, (hearing the said mr howe with a loud
6. voice say that the whole shipp and lading were due to my lord of
7. Arundell and that hee seized upon all (or to that effect) they cried
8. out in a tumultous manner and said, if they were due to my lord of
9. Arundell they were due to them (or to the same effect) and therewithall
10. they fell in a tumultous furious manner aboard, and fell to pulling
11. cutting and hacking and wholly plundered tooke and carried away
12. away all the said shipps lading and goods, saving three or foure boates
13. lading oof the goods and sailes. And that the said people dispossessed
14. the said master and company of the said goods (saving what was in the
15. boates as aforesaid) and cut downe all the masts and rigging and
16. carried the same away alsoe, all which hee knoweth being present and
17. seeing the same, and seeing the master and company doe their best to
18. prevent the said spoile, and violence.
19. To the sixth hee saith hee beleeveth the such comming and speeches
20. of the said mr how, were ..... and gave the occasion for the said people
21. soe to fall on and commit the said spoile and outrage, and that if
22. hee the said how had donne his endeavour and countenanced the master
23. and company, and opposed the said violence, hee beleeveth the same had not
24. bin committed, but the said shipp and goo goods ˹or greater part thereof˺ had bin preserved.
25. To the seaventh hee saith that hee dwelling a good distance from that place
26. and being but a stranger there, doth not knowe the names of any of the
27. persons that tooke away any of the goods, tackle, apparell, furniture
28. or hull of the said shipp, or that have since got any thereof into their
29. hands, saving (as hee hath heard) some Commissioners herein appointed,
30. have recovered part thereof, this deponent seeing some of the tobaccoe
31. and sailes in their the said Commissioners custodie. And otherwise
32. hee cannot as hee saith depose.
