Andrew Stone of the parish of St Olave in Southwark
Mariner but borne at Stockholme in Sweden
Carpenters Mate of the Redd Rose aged Eighty fower yeares
or thereabouts a wittnesse sworne & examined saith & deposeth as followeth vizt./
To the first article of the sayd allegation hee saith that in the moneth
of Aprill & May 1659 the arlate Edmund Lemmon and Company all
Englishmen were commonly accompted and reputed and
lawfull owners & proprietors of the articulated Shipp the Redd Rose and
her tackle Apparell and furniture this hee the better knoweth for that
hee went carpenters mate & Pylott of her from London during the
whole voyage in question And further to their acte he deposeth not.
To the 2 article hee saith that in the moneth of May 1659 the sayd ship
the Redd Rose did remayne in a peaceable manner in the River of
Thames articulate not farr from Embden arlate where the sayd Lemmon &
his shipps Company were then taking in & ladeing aboard her a ladeing
of salt to be there transported to Stockholm in Sweden a place in the
East Seas in league & amity with this commonwealth of England which
ladeing was taken aboard ther for Accompt (as he hath credibly heard
and beleeveth) of English merchants subjects of this Commonwealth
And further to this act hee not depose./
To the third article of the sayd allegation he saith that in the sayd Moneth
of May 1659 and while the sayd ship Redd Rose did abide in a peaceable
manner in the sayd River of Thames & nor far from Embden aforesaid
taking in of her ladeing the arlate [?xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx] and John Drewer
subjects (as he hath credibly heard & beleeveth) of the Sates of the United
Netherland provinces did whilst the articulate Edmon Lemmon and
severall afore of his shippes Company were on shoare about the occasion
of his sayd ship the red Rose to provide beere bread & other provisions
and necessaries for the sayd ship and to send more salt & other ladeing
aboarde her, with divers souldiers & mariners come aboard the sayd
ship and in a hostile manner seize the sayd ship & such of their
company as were aboard her & her ladeing of salt then aboard her
and brake open the cupboards boxes chests and truncks in the sayd
ship and tooke away all the bills of ladeing and other ship papers
and evidences & bills of exchange and tooke also bonds & bills for moneys due to some
of the company of the said ship and many letters which severall
of the shipps Company had brought from England to be carried to the
English ffleete with[?xx] Sounds? this hee the better knoweth for that hee
this deponent (being one of the shipps company which was on shoare
with the sayd Lemmon when the sayd seizure was made) did after
hee & the sayd Lemmon & the part of the shipps company were
suffered? to come aboard the sayd ship soo sayd truncks Chests
boxes Cupboards were broken open and all the papers taken out of there
& knoweth that there was a bond for payment of Thirty two pounds sterling to this
deponent & and an other for payment of five pounds & another for payment
of sixe pounds to this deponent and …….. which this deponent
