The Oxinden family of Brooke was linked in marriage to the Master family of Langden through the marriage of Henry Oxinden of Brooke to the eldest daughter of Richard Master of Langden.[1]

Henry Oxinden of Barham recorded in his commonplace book:

Sept 28. 1653. Henry Oxinden of Brooke married at Denton to Richard Master of Langden Esq.r his elder daughter.[2]

Sep. 17. 1663 I dined at Brook with my Brother Richard, S:r William ?Man, & Squire Roberts[3]



?Mary Master, Letter to Sir George Oxenden, March 1663


One of the many Master nieces, ?Mary Master [is this the future Mary Escott?], wrote to Sir George Oxenden in March 1663 from Langden with family news. She included news of Deane, Brooke and Langden:

Deane is as you left it, onely y:t little parlaur has suffered a Death, to rise more Glorious, I am witness of y:e present Ru[x]n [Could be "ruen" for "ruin"?]: Brooke hath not yett permited as a ???warning wee have spent y:e tyme ill, hope to recover it this summer, Poore Langdon is y:e same alsoe & soo it sho y:t ambition y:e favour of being esteemed by you[4]
