Abstract & context


Michael Dunkin was a long serving officer of the English East India Company. In 1647 he was described in the Court Minutes as "assistant treasurer"[1] Two years later, on August 27th, 1647, he was made free of the Company "having served many years."[2] In 1659 he was described as "cash-keeper," on a salary of £150 per annum, ranking after the accountant-general, Jeremy Sambrooke; the writer of letters, Samuel Sambrooke; and the solicitor, James Acton.[3]

"[July 35, 1645] Officers for the Company's service are chosen as follows : Jeremy Sambrooke to be book-keeper or general accountant ; Adam Bowen, writer and ' register of letters ' to foreign parts, and keeper of the calico warehouse ; Valentine Markham, auditor ; John Blount, warehouse-keeper of indigo and cinnamon, etc. ; James Acton, solicitor ; Thomas Rilston, husband ; John Young, purser-general ; William Hurt, paymaster of the mariners ; Samuel Sambrooke, assistant to Bowen ; John Spiller, beadle and porter ; Michael Dunkin, assistant to the Treasurer ; Richard Swinglehurst, secretary and keeper of the Exchange cellar"[4]

"Marriage Articles of Thos. Waddington of Plaistow (co.Essex), gent., and Mary, dau. of Michl. Dunkin of London, merchant, of ppties [not details] to be purchd. in Essex, Kent, Hertford, Middlesex, Surrey or Bedford, 1671."[5]

"[1671] Dec. 13 Thomas Waddington, of S:t Andrew Undershaft, London, Gent., Bach:r ab:t 23, & Mary Dunkin, of Fenchurch Street, London, Sp:r, ab:t 18 ; consent of father Michael Dunkin, Merchant ; at All Hallows in the Wall, London."[6]
