Abstract & context

In this letter, Richard Craddock notes that in his last letter to Sir George Oxenden he had promised on his arrival at Spahaune to lodge a complaint with the King of Persia about various abuses and affronts the English had been subjected to in the last several years. This was not possible due to the absence of the King. Instead Craddock wrote two petitions and sent Abdlehaud to deliver them. Craddock is hopeful that he may receive a stricter ffirmand. Craddock has engaged "our broker ?Tockeney" to satisfy all the court expenses "for ?Piscashes & other Bribes w:ch must necessarily bee given pretending I had noo occasion to Engage my selfe in Durbarr businese I haveing allreaady Conclud:d w:th y:e Shawbund:r for y.e Hono:ble Comp:as share of Customes." Craddock states that past agents have incurred vey large expenses but to no avail "y:t I am quite dishartned to adventure on any more w:th out an Expresse ord:r from y:e Right Worp:ll y:e Presid:t Esq:r." The Shawbunder appears to have agreed, after much delay, to pay the charges demanded by Craddock. Craddock states that the payment of expenses to various officials and officers at the Bund has gone on so long that it has "growne now into y:e nature of an Evill Disease w:ch cannot bee Cured w:thout fforceable meanes." Craddock states that these high expenses make his factory appear "most unprofitable." He wishes "God in his Mercy send us better tymmes y:t wee may not onely bee spending but alsoe putt into a Capacity to encrease theire Stock w:ch would prove both á Cred:t & satisfaction to us y:t live heere." Craddock concludes that he has been told "noothing in these parts will Content y:r Worp:ll more than fresh fruit as pears Aples Etc w:ch at my Comeing downe I will not faile to Bring with mee."
