Notes

Barnetby-le-wold, or Barnetby-in-the-wold, lies in north Lincolnshire, roughly ten miles due south of Barton-upon-Humber and the Humber estuary.

The Kelke family was present in Barnetby-le-wold from at least the early sixteenth century, when it is likely that it had gentry status. Roger Kelke, son of Christopher Kelke of Barnetby, was appointed a Fellow of St John's Cambridge and later Master of Magdalen College, Cambridge, in the mid and later sixteenth century.[3]

Robert Kelke was the brother of Edward Kelke (senior) of Sandwich, gent. Robert himself was of Barnetby-le-wold, and may have been the elder brother, presumably retaining family land in the area. Edward Kelke (senior) was presumably born in Barnetby-le-wold, and, after attending Gray's Inn in London, presumably moved to Sandwich, where he practised as a legally trained town clerk, but retained links with London and Lincolnshire.

Alexander Emerson is mentioned in an accompanying note to the copy of Robert Kelke's as the executor of the will of Dorothy Kelke, Robert's widow, she having herself been sole executrix of Robert's will. Alexander Emerson was later involved in a law suit together with his wife brought by them against Elizabeth Dallison in 1659 and beyond.[4] His wife Dorothy Emerson, was a daughter of Robert Kelke. The Emerson family was present in parishes close to Barnetby, Lincolnshire, from at least the mid-sixteenth century, including Glanford Brigg and Searby, and later Barnetby itself.
