In the 1637 deposition of a Colchester merchant regarding the sale of a 250 ton Dutch bottomed shipat Calais, the seller, Michael de Haze, is described as being a "merchant dwellinge in Callice [Calais]".[1] But, in a deposition de Haze himself 31 years later, he claimed to have been living in England for the last thirty years, though born in Calais.[2]

Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

March 1637

Twenty-eight year old Colchester merchant Thomas Reynolds deposed on March 9th in the High Court of Admiralty. He described the sale by a Calais based merchant, Michael de Haze, of a Dutch bottomed ship of 250 tons burthen, to a Newcastle merchant, a London merchant, and to an English merchant resident at Calais as a factor.

December 1658

Fifty-seven year old Michael de Haze deposed on December 8th 1658 in the High Court of Admiralty. He gave evidence in a case concerning freight rates for salt transported from France to the Spanish Netherlands.[3]

In his deposition de Haze states that he was born at Calais, but had lived for the last thirty years in England, and gave his residence as Dover.[4]
