Biographical synthesis
Robert Burden (alt. Burdin) (b. ca. 1608; d. ca. 1677). Baker.
Resident in Gillingham in Kent in 1658.
A will for Robert Burden, baker of Gillingham, Kent, was proved on February 13th 1677.
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Fifty year old Robert Burden deposed on June 17th 1658 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on a libel on the behlafe of Henry Jolfe in the case of "Henry Jolfe late master or comander of the hoyjgh the Thomas and Katherine of Rochester against Richard Cleeve and Company owners and proprietors of the sayd hoigh and against all others etcetera".
Burden stated that the hoy or vessel named the Thomas and Katherine of Rochester belonged to Edward Fawnce (during his lifetime) and Richard Cleeve. Burden testified that in July 1657 he had been in the presence of Henry Jolfe, the master of the hoy, Edward Fawnce and another of Gillingham, and that he heard Edward Fawnce declare that Henry Jolfe was the hoy's master by his appointment.[1]
