Transcription The 23th of August 1654 [CENTRE HEADING] The 23th of August 1654 [CENTRE HEADING] On the behalfe of Thomas Collins and}<br /> others touching the Carvell the ''Lady of''}<br /> ''Nazareth'' aforesaid.} '''3''' '''George Chappell''' of London Mariner<br /> aged 54 yeeres or thereabouts sworne XXX<br /> before the said Commissioners, saith and<br /> deposeth as followeth videlicet. To the first Interrogatorie hee saith and deposeth that hee well<br /> knew the shipp or Carvell called our ''Lady of Nazareth'' arlate whereof<br /> Richard Chappell (this deponents sonne) was commander; and saith<br /> that shee belonged in proprietie to Thomas Collins, henry Bouford<br /> and company English merchants, who were alsoe commonly accompted and<br /> reputed the true and lawfull owners and proprietors of her and of<br /> her tackle and furniture, and this deponent heard Ambrose Chappell<br /> (commander of the ''John and Mary'' unto which the said Carvall<br /> belonged and was alsoe a part of her) say that shee belonged<br /> unto them. To the second hee saith that in the yeere 1650 the said Carvall<br /> being out ward bound on a voyage from Lisbone for the Brazeele<br /> was by the command of Generall Blake (who then lay with<br /> the Parliaments fleete before the barr of Lisbone) ordered to attend<br /> the said fleete, and further that in or about the beginning of June<br /> 1650 old stile the said Carvell was by Generall Blake sent into<br /> Lisbone with a message from him, and on the day of her<br /> said going in on the said message being in or neere the about the second<br /> day of June 1650, shee was seized at Lisbone with all<br /> that belonged unto her by the kinge of Portugalls officers, and her<br /> master and all her English mariners turned out of her and imprisoned<br /> by the said kings order, and kept some five monethes, some foure<br /> and some a lesse time in the said imprisonment, and the said<br /> owners were and are deprived of the said Carvell by the said<br /> seizure made as aforesaid by the order of the king of Portugall,<br /> from whom Prince Rupert had her, all which hee knoweth to<br /> be true being present at Lisbone and seeing and observing the<br /> premisses to be soe donne, and being imprisoned with the said<br /> master and company. To the third hee saith the said Carvell was of the burthen of<br /> betwixt 25 and 30 tuns or thereabouts, And (as this deponent<br /> heard the said Ambrose Chappell who bought her and others<br /> diverse times say) shee cost and stood the owners in XX 600 mill<br /> Reis or thereabouts, And otherwise hee cannot depose. To the fourth árticle hee saith and deposeth that there were pilchards<br /> and other goods aboard the said shipp or Carvell the ''lady of Nazareth''<br /> at the time of her said seizure for the accompt of the master and other<br /> English, And otherwise hee cannot depose. To the 5th hee saith hee estimateth the said owners to be<br /> damnified by the said seizure and their deprivation of the said<br /> vessell thereby in the said summe of six hundre mill Res; and<br /> hee estimateth the said Richard Chappell her master<br /> in losse of his time, goods, clothes, bookes Instruments and<br /> [?chages] to be damnified by the said seizure and imprisonment<br /> the summe of one hundred pounds sterling at the least, And otherwise hee<br /> cannot depose.
