The Inclosed w:ch accompany this were d:d mee at Angedeiva, whilst I went, through y:e invitation of S:r Abrah:m Shipman, & extraordinary importunities of Cap:t Minors & Stevens, where I was no sooner arrived than wellcomed w:th thousands of curses by y:e souldiary, beleeveing y:t I had a hand in theire comeing to y:t Island, which soolong as my Lo:d of Marleburgh was there they alltogeather disliked, though presently after being furnised w:th provisions from severall places, w:ch I caused too be brough:t unto them, they had a better opinion both of it & mee & seem:d to bee thankfull unto mee, for y:e Care I tooke of them.

The Leopard &Dunkirke sett sayle from thince y:e 14:th Curr:t y:e former in y:e morneing about 10: aclocke, & y:e latter aboute y:e same howres at night.

The 19:th I returned to y:e Citty, & y:t very Evening arrived at y:e Barr 7: Dutch shipps y:t brought upwards of 3500 soules from Cotchoone w:ch place they toke by assault on Epiphany day or y:e 6th of this mo:th now pssedm y:t day when y:e sunn was upon y:e marridian they made a breach w:th 11: whole Cannonshott off at once, filling y:e moate w:th sacks of sand & plankes on

topp of y:m for theire more ffacile passage & Entereing the Citty in y:t smoake & y:e poore Defend:ts who weary w:th much watreing & Continuall paines takeing being then at rest, brought such á strange Confusion on them as they weare all a mazed however many fell presently to theire ?Azinos & fought very man fully endeavouring to beate y:e Dutch out againe, but being overprst w:th multitudes of ?Naires of w:ch they had 19000: to theire assistance besides 6000 Europeans & Bandanesses were forced to retire to theire Bulwarke of Calwotte wheire theire Grall was, who in this great ?exigence putt up a white fflag But Rÿckloff van ?Goenes sent him word y:t it was to late to treate, & y:t hee should bring him presently y:e keyes of y:e Citty; w:ch hee was forced to submitt to, after y:e 3:d tyme Ryckloff entered y:e Citty in greate triumph rideing betweene Lucus van ?waiden& Cap:t Dixon a frenchman; van waiden being made Governor of y:e sa:d Citty; many fell on boath sides in y:e enterprise, & many are brought hither wounded, amongst y:e rest a poore English souldier shott in 5: severall places & yet to Admiration not a wound mortall; y:e ?smycon ?mor entertayneing great hopes of his Life; All y:e souldiers y:t weare taken w:ch they found well or slightly wounded they Intend for to transport them for Europe; y.e Black people they make slaves to theire Comp:a for 5 yeares, & suffers 19000 woemen to remaine amongst them.

They are now before ?Carmanore w:ch every Body heere Concludes to bee all ready lost, This Losse of Cocheene makes all y:e ?fidalgoes, & Comons of this Citty Looke upon Ant:o de Mello de Caxxo their new Govern:r but very strangely, Condemning him in Grall for not haveing delivered Bombay unto my L:d of Marleburgh & S:r Abrah:m Shipman for his Maj:tis use they haveing very lately beene at him to make an offer of it yett, & noo longer since then yesterday hee writt mee a lre, desired mee to invite S.r Abrah:m hither w:th all his people to winter In his Citty, being either very fearefull of y.e Holland:s or else hee intends by this meanes to make some introduction or beginning, in mkeing offer of y:e said Bombayin; But w:t hee writt mee I heare w:th send its Coppy, w:th my answer for your perusall.

S:r I have written unto you many lres, in w:ch I desired divers Courtesyes, & although you have not afforded mee y.e assurance of any, nor soo much as taken notice of any of my s:d lres yett I impute it all to many businesses, w:th w:ch I verily beleeve you have beene very much over prest of late, I am now beecome a new supplyant unto you y:t you would soo farr oblidge mee as to favour mee by ??furdering my Wyffe unto mee being at pres:t in a farr worse Condition than I have beene since my Comeing to Goa; off this I have written Enough unto m:r Ger:d Aungier who Indeed I have entreated to sollicitt you in my behalfe, as to my pres:t requests, & God returneing mee to my pristine being, I shall not faile suddainely to bee w:th you againe to receive yo:r Commands in y.e Interim wishing you all Imaginable ffelicitie.
