Biographical synthesis

Peter Mathews (alt. Mathewes; alt. Pieter Mattheus) (b. ca. 1618; d. poss. 1658). Merchant.

Elder brother of Middleburg and London merchant Baldwin Mathews.

Peter Mathews married Sara (TBC) Vanbrugh ca. 1640, a daughter of London merchant Giles Vanbrugh. He was brother-in-law of London merchant Simon Delboe (b. ?; d. ca. 1676), who married Sara's sister Anna Vanbrugh ca. 1649.[1] Two children of "Pieter Mattheus" and wife Sara were christened in 1640 and 1645 in the Dutch church at Austin Friars, and a furtherseven children were christened between 1641 and 1653 in the parish of Saint Martin Orgar.[2]

Resident in 1655 in London.

The 1662 hearth tax record for Saint Martin Orgar's precincet shows Peter Mathews (and Bauldwin Mathews) 10 Hearths.[3]

Deposition of Samuel Beake, son of London merchant Arnold Beake. In his deposition Samuel Beake mentions Arnold Beake, his father, Mr Peter Mathews, and John Dolins, who were owners of the Saint John, which carryed 300 pigs of lead lead from London to Nantes, to be invested in wine and vinegar in Nantes, and then transported to Flanders.[4]

Deposition of Peter XXX, servant to Peter Mathews, dated October 14th 1653 in the "clayme of Beake and Mathews". The ship the S:t John was bought by Arnold Beake and Peter mathews for 490-07-00 sterling, and paid with a bill of exchange drawn from Holland on Peter Mathews by order of one M:r Anthins de ?Sondt. Peter ?Soen (OR, ?Som) was the servant and "cashere" of Mr Peter Mathews and saw his correspondence and books of accompt,[5]

January 1655

Thirty-seven year old Peter Mathews deposed on January 10th 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation in the cause of "Peter Cock and Baldwin Matthewes for their silver in the shipp Saint John Baptist.[6]

October 1656

"Pesonall Answeres of Elias Beake made to the pretensed positions of a libell given against him and Peter Mathewes in the name of John Salter and others as marriners of the late ship called the James whereof James Hedgethorne was master", dated October 28th 1656.[7]

April 1659

Forty-two year old Peter Mathews deposed on April 22nd 1659 in the High Court of Admiralty. Ge was examined on an allegation in the cause of "XX".
