The 21th day of October 1653 [CENTRE HEADING]

The Clayme of Edward Peters of Antwerp for his}
moneys in the Saint John Evangelist John de Vos}
Master _ Suckley Budd}

Examined upon an Allegation given on the
behalfe of the said Clayme.

I us

Anthony Loïs of Antwerp in Brabant
Cashier and Bookekeeper to the said Edward Peters
aged thirty yeares or thereabouts sworne and
examined.

To the first second and third articles of the said Allegation hee saith and
deposeth, That in or about the moneth of Aprill in this present yeare
1653. the arlate Edward Peters a Merchant and inhabitant of Antwerp
in Brabant and a subject of the King of Spaine, did by John Lamotte and
Elias [?Prwigh] two of his ffactors and Correspondents at Cadiz in Spaine lade
or cause to be laden and putt on board the said shipp the Saint John Evangelist then
lyeing at or neare unto Cadiz aforesaid for the said Edward Peters the producents
owne accompt and adventure foure hundred pieces of eight and nine markes
and 6 ounces of silver N°. A. contained in one bagg
and two other baggs each containeing six hundred pieces of eight all the said baggs being of the
marke in the margent, to be transported and carried in the said shipp

from Cadiz to Duinkerke or Ostend in fflander and there to be discharged
and delivered unto the said producent or his order for his accompt, [?]
this deponent knoweth being as aforesaid Cashier and Bookekeeper to the said
producent, in which condition this deponent hath served him for about 6 yeares
last past, by meanes whereof he is punctually acquainted with the whole trade
and negotiation of the said producent, and saw [?] presented and copied severall letters of advise
sent by the said producent over land unto his said ffactors ordering and appointing
them to lade silver and moneyes for his accompt upon and aboard all such five
shipps as should come from thence to Dunquerke or Ostend in fflander and
particularly after the lading of the parcells of silver and money predeposed
aboard the said shipp this deponent saw and perused 2 letters of advise sent from
the said ffactors to the producent together with two bills of lading for the same
intimating that they the said factors had respectively laden the said respective
parcells as is predeposed, whereupon this deponent according to his usuall Customs
entred the said parcells of silver into the said producents booke of accompts, upon
the Credit of the said ffactors whereby this deponent well knoweth that the
said Edward Peters was and is and ought to be the true lawfull and sole
Owner and proprietor of the said silver and moneys, and that no other person
or persons whatsoever have any manner of right title or interest to or in the
said silver or moneys or any part thereof. Hee further saith, that he hath
credibly heard that the said shipp being in her Course from Cadiz towards
Dunquirke or Ostend with the said silver on board her was mett withall
surprized and taken by some of the shipps of this Commonwealth, and
brought into the River of Thames, and that the said sylver is now
remained
