neither durst the sayd haslegrave goe soe neere Cadiz as to come
under Comand of the forts there untill gee gad sold and disposed
of the pepper which was pumped up as aforesayd because it laye more obvious to
discovery then the other baggs taht were not removed to be mended, for that hee well knew the pepper
was a Comoditie there prohibited to be brought by any but the King of Spaines subiects.
And hee saith that the sayd haslegrave did at Allecant deliver to a factor there
(whose name as this deponent hath heard is Mr Bence) for the use and Accompt of the sayd
Andrews and Clutterbrooke the remaynder of the sayd baggs of pepper receaved on
board and undisposed of and unsold at Cadiz And further to this article hee cannot of his
certayne knowledge depose but veleeveth none of the sayd pepper was diminished
or imbezeld by the sayd haselgrave or Company And further saving his foregoeing
deposition hee cannot depose./

The said George Pattison to the Crosse Interrogatories:-/ [CENTRE HEADING]

To the first hee saith hee this rendent is payd his full Wages for the Voyage in
Controversy in the quality hee served therein as by him is predeposed And
otherwise negatively/.

To the second hee saith, That it is usuall for Masters of shipps by themselves
or their Mates and substitutes in their absence to see to the stowage of goods
received aboard their said shipps, but they doe not usually themselves take notice of all and singular
the goods laden in the same, whether well or ill conditioned at the time of lading:-

To the 3. hee saith hee was not aboard nor belonged to the shipp in question
at the time of the lading of the pepper in Controversy, And therefore cannot depose

To the 4th hee saith hee was present at the time of the delivery ofsome of the
pepper in question in the roade of Cadiz by the interrate hasilgrave, but
what number of baggs, or what quantity or weight the same were of, or
how much money the same were sold for this rendent knoweth not:-/

To the 5th hee saith the said pepper was delivered in baggs [?nere] Cadiz as aforesayd
by the said Captaine hasilgraves order, who caused the said baggs then being
very rotten and defective to be mended with such old canvas and sailes as
hee then had aboard him, And saith hee saw some of the said baggs of
pepper weighed aboard the said shipp before such their delivery, And otherwise
saving his foregoeing deposition hee cannot depose:-/

The sayd Samuel Symonds upon Interrogatories [CENTRE HEADING]

To the first Interrogatorie hee saith hee was one of the shipps Company Interrogated the voyage Interrate
and was a quarter Master of her and is paid his full wages for the sayd voyage in the
quality hee served in aand was noe otherwise a servant to him then his sayd office in the shipp
required and otherwise negatively./

To the second and third Interrogatories hee answereth that it is usuall for Masters of shipps to committ
the care of stowage of goods to their Mates or other substitutes and as hee beleeveth the Masters doe not
use to take notice them selves but they who take them in doe usually take notice in what condition goods
