Abstract

In December 1668 the Legorne Merchant was chartered by the London merchant Daniell Gates. A charter party was drawn up and duely executed between Daniel Gates and the ship's captain, David Hamilton, who was of Limehouse, Middlesex. Hamilton himself was a part owner of the ship.

The ship was to make a nine month voyage into the Mediterrean, stopping at a large number of ports. The ship departed later than planned, leading allegedly to damage to trade and to cost overruns. Gates chose for these stated reasons to instigate a Chancery suit against the main owner, John Letten, and the ship's captain, David Hamilton. His Bill of Complaint is set out in C10/160/41 f. 1). Hamilton's answer is set out in C10/160/41 f. 2. The ship's route appears to have been London to Malaga, to Genoa, to Legorne/Livorno, to Naples, to Messina, to Sephalonia, to Venice, to Zant, and back, possibly via Allicant, to London. However, this possible route needs to be checked against the written answer by David Hamilton, and there appear to have been diversions from the plan due to concern about war with and predation by Algiers.

Daniel Gates appears to have traded regularly to Mediterranean ports. The owner of the Old African, he dispatched this vessel to Zante and Morea in 1680 to bring back currants, which were to be bought by a local merchant on his account.[1]

Appended to Hamilton's answer are a set of accounts for the voyage. These accounts are set out below. Data input is not yet complete for the accounts, and only the text of the accounts has been reproduced below. Digital images are available for the full accounts for private study.

The accounts detail port charges by port, and separately list goods unloaded and loaded by port and freighter, detailing quantities and value, and also the names of the recipient of the goods at each port.

Additionally the accounts provide the wage bill for the ship's crew, identifying all crew members, their role on the ship, as well as months and days worked, their rate of pay, and total pay due.

The accounts need to be analysed in detail, but it is striking from preliminary inspection how many freighters and recipients are listed in the accounts, and the relatively small quantities which were being shipped.
