In the Name of God Amen: The nyne and twentieth day of November 1642 London the sixteenth year of the raigne of our soveraigne Lord Charles by the grace of god king of England Scotland ffrance and Ireland Defender of the faith vzt I Nicolus Abaye of London merchant being praised be god in healthe of bodie and of good & pfect minde & memory but considering the frailty & mortality of this pr:sent life, doe now therefore & the rather for that I am purposed (by gods permission) very shortly to depart this Realme & to travell into forreigne parts beyond the seas make & declare this my last will & testam:t, in mannr & forme following

That is to say ffirst & before all & earthley things I doe commend my soule to god that gave it & my bodie to the earth from whence it came assuredly trusting the alone merrits of Jesus Christ my only saviour and Redeemer both soule and body shall at the last day have a joyfull resurrecton to eternall life

And for & touching my all sure goods chattells & psonall estate it lately pleased god of his goodness to bless me with all & whereof I shall be possessed at my decease & which shall to me be due and oweing or belonging me I give & dispose the same as followeth that is to say

IMPRIMIS I give to the poore of the parish of Layton in Essex the summe of fortie pounds to be distributed amongst them by the appointment of my executor as he shall thinke fitting

ITEM I give to the poore of the severall pishes of St Andrewe Undercroft and St Dionis Backchurch in London St Giles w:thout Cripplegate London St Mary Matsellon als White Chapple & St Leonard in Shoreditch in the County of Middlesex & St George the Martyr in Southwarke in ye Countie of Surrey the sume of one hundred and twenty pounde that is to say to the poore of every of the said parishes twenty pounds a peece to be distributed likewise by the directon of my said executor as he in his discretion shall thinke fitting

ITEM I give to the President and Governours of Christs Hospitall in London towards the reliefe of the poore children harboured in the said hospitall the summe of threescore poundes of St Bartholomews Hospitall in London towards the releife of the poore in that hospitall the sume of ffifty pounds

ITEM I give to the President and Governours of the Hospitall of St Thomas in Southwarke towards the releife of the poore in that hospitall the sume of fourty pounds

ITEM I give & appointe y:e sume of one hundred pounds for the inlargement and setting at libertie of twenty poore prisoners out of the severall prisons of y:e Kings bench Ludgate & Newgate and the Compters in London such as my executor shall in his Xdiscretion discretion xxxxx & iudge doe best deserve be released and such excused debts & charge may be satisfied and every of them sett at liberty for the sume of five pounds a peece or under, And if any of them shalbe released for less than five pounds, That then every suchof them soe released shall have the residue of the said V:li that shalbe left & not dibursed for his enlargem:t given him in money

ITEM I give & appoint the like summe of C:li to be disposed by my executor to and amongst twenty poore Ministers such as he shall think so fitt to receave the same ; that is to say, to every of the said Ministers five pounds a peace

ITEM I give and appoint the sume of ffiftiepounds to be disposed by my executor to and amongst poore Ministers widdows such as he shall thinke fitt that is to say to each of the said widdows five pounds a peece

ITEM I give & appoint the sume of one hundred & twenty pounds to be ordered and disposed by my executor as he in his discretion shall thinke fittinge for on towards the ransoming redeeming of six poore Englishe ptestant Captives out of the bondage and Slavourie of the Turkes

ITEM I give and appointe the sume of one hundred pounds to be disposed & bestowed by my executor upon ten poore boyes of the children of ffreemen of the Citty of London such as my executor shall thinke fitting for the cloathing & putting them forth Apprentices to some handcrafte trade in y:e

Said Citty or the liberties thereof at the discretion of my executor

ITEM I give & appoint the summe of one hundred & twenty pounds to be disposed & bestowed by my executor upon twenty poore boyes & girles to be taken upp out of the streete of London as vagrants for the cloathing & transporting them out to Virginia New England or any of the Western plantations there to be placd

ITEM I give & appoint to the Master & Wardens of the Company of Clothworkers of London the sum of forty pounds to be by them disposed and distributed to and amongst such twentie poore decayed men of ye same company and sure "xxty" [presumably this means twenty, using roman numerals] poore widdows whose husbands had bin members of that XXXX as by the wardens & assistants of the same company, or the more part of them shalbe appointed to receave the same That is to say To every one of the sayd poore men and poore women XXs (i.e. 20s) a peece I give & appoint the summe of one hundred pounds to be disposed and given by my Executor to threescore poore old men and fortie poore old women for poore Gownes that is to say to every of the sayd poore men & women XXs a peece to buy every of them a Gowne in w:ch I will they attend as poore mourners at my funerall (if I dye in England) But whetherI dye in England or elsewhere I will that the said sume of one hundred pounds be given amongst sixtie poore old men and fortie poore old women for gownes as aforesaid And touching other mourning to be worne for me after my decease I leave it to my executor to give mourning to such of my friend and friends as he in his discretion shall thinke fitting

ITEM I give to my sister M:rs Alice Bramston the wife of John Brampston Esq the summe of six hundred pounds

ITEM I give to their Sonne Antony Brampston the summe of one hundred pounds and to their three daughters twenty pounds a peece

ITEM I give to my brother Sir Thomas Abdye and his Ladye, my brother Mr. Robert Abdye and his wife, my brother M:r John Abdye and my brother in lawe Mr Jn:o Bramston and his wife tenn pounds a peece to make every of them a mourning Ringe for Remembrance

ITEM I give to Xarcell [?] Abdye the daughter of my sayde brother Sir Thomas Abdye the summe of twenty pounds

ITEM I give to my Cozen M:r James Meggs the summe of tenn pounds

ITEM I give to my kinswoman Mrs Mary Reeve the sume of fyftie pounds

ITEM I give Cozen Mr Humfry Abdy the summe of two hundred poundes

ITEM I give to my Cozen Antony Daniell (COULD BE “Damill”) the summe of one hundred pounds to be paid unto him at the tyme as he shall accomplish his full age of twenty and one yeares And I give to the rest of his brothers that shalbe liveing at my decease y:e summe of tenn pounds a peece, w:ch I will shall be likewise payed to every of them respectively at such tymes as they shalla ccomplish their severall ages of twenty and one yeares; And I give to each of the sisters of the sayd Antony Daniell as shalbe liveing at my Decease the like summe of ten pounds a peece w:ch I will shall be payed unto them respectively at such tymes as they shall severally accomplish their respective ages of XXI (21) yeares or be married w:ch of the same shall first happen

ITEM I give to Millicent Exxx the summe of twenty pounds

ITEM I give to my loveing frend M:r Roger Vivian and Mr Richard Milward the summe of fortie pounds a peece

The rest and residue of all & singular my goods chattells creddits & debtsXXXX the debts by me oweing Shalbe payed my funerall discharged & y:e legacies in this my will pformed I wholly give & bequeath the same to my three brethren before named S:r Thomas Abdye Robert Abdye and J:n Abdye equally to be devided amongst them part & part like

And I do hereby nominate ordaine & make my said brother Robert Abdye of this my last will & testan:t sole executor not doubting but he will faithfully pforme & execute the same according to my true meaneing before herein declared And I doe hereby declare my will & minde to be that yf any pson or psons to whome I have before my decease of if any pson or psons to whome I have by this my will given any Legacie or Legacies for paym:t whereof some tyme is limited as set downe in this my will do dept this life either before my decease or before the tyme or tymes limitted or menconed in this my will for paym:t of such Legacie or Legacies respectively That then the Legacies guifts & bequests by me given or made to all & every such pson or psons soe dyeing respectively Shalbe void And xxx every such Legacie shalbe accompted as part & parcell of the rest and residue of my estate and goe and be disposed according as the said rest and residue as before in this my will limitted & appointed that is to say To my three owne brethren part and part like And concerneing my freeholde rents & hereditaments I leave the same to goe as they are limitted & devised by the will of my late father Anthony Abdy Alderman
