IN THE NAME OF GOD The ffifth Day of November Anno Domi 1670 And in the Two and Twentieth yeare of the reigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles the Second by the grace of God of england Scotland ffrance and Ireland Ling Defender of the ffaith x:r. I S:r John Langham of Cottesbrooke in the County of Northton Knight and Baronett knwoing That this earthly Tabernacle of my Body is subject to Death and being at present in good health and of perfect mind and memory (thanks be to God for the same) Doe make and ordaine this my Last Will and Testament in manner and forme following (viz:t)

FFIRST and aboveall things I commend my Soule to Almighty God my Creator trusting most assuredly to be saved by the only merits death and passion of Jesus Christ my Saviour & Redeemer

SECONDLY my Body I committ to the earth whereof it was formed to be decently buryed in the Vault of Cottesbrooke lately made (by my appointment) for a burying place for my ffamily whither I desire and hereby order my Executors hereafter named to remove the Coffin or Bones of my late Deare wife from my Vault in the Chancellof S:t Martins Outwich London[1]

THIRDLY concerning theordering disposing and settling of such worldly estate as God of his Infinite Goodnesse hath bestowed upon mee which I shall as willingly leave as everI enjoyed the same Leaving disposed my Lands by Acts executed in my life time Accordingto my intentions I do dispose the residue of my estate as followeth

FFIRST my Will & desireis That all and everysuch debts and summes of money

WHATSOEVER I shall truely owe shall be satisfyed and paid with all convenient speed after my decease As also the Legacies hereinafter bequeathed & ffunerall charges

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my Loving Sonn S:r James Langham[2] Kn:t All my Corne and hay which shall be remaining at my decease upon my Manno:r and Lands at Cottesbrooke afores:d And also my Plate Linnen Householdstuffe and ffurniture of Household and Husbandry and all other goods and chattells whatsoever in and about my dwelling house at Cottesbrooke (not otherwise by mee bequeathed) Except mycattle and Cottesbrooke Sibberstoft and XXXXX in the said County of Northton (namely) Oxen Steers XXXX Bulls Cowes Calves Sheep Lambes And also except all Specialities Debts and Securities of Debts Ready Money in the hands of my servant John Payne or elsewhere Rents & Arreares of Rents then unpaid at Cottestbrooke, Quinton, Silberstoft and RXXXX, which I will and hereby ordershall be brought to the Accompt of my personall Estate And that my said Sonn S:r James Langham shall take and accept of all the said Cattle at the rates and prices shall be sett upon them by my said servant John Payne in his Last quarters Accompt before my death

ITEM I give and bequeath to my Loving sonn William Langham the summe of Tenn Thousand pounds of lawfull money of England to be paid him within Six Moneths after my decease in pursuance and performance of my coven:t and Agreem:t to give or leave him the said summe of Tenn Thousand poundes by Will or otherwise conteyned in the Certaine Articles of Agreem:t indented bearing date on or about the Nynth day of July1666 made or menconed to be made betweene mee the said S:r John Langham of the first part my said Sonn William Langham of the Second part & Herbert Morley of Glynne in the County of Sussex, Esq:r William Hayof Little ?Hertstead in the said County of Sussex, Esq:r and Walter ?Pincheon of London Esq.r of the third part

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my Loving Sonn Stephen Langham All That my Capitall Messuages or tenem:twith the appurtenances commonly calledor knowne by the name of Crosbyes Place or Crosby House scituate lying & being in the Parish of S:t Helens within Bishopsgate London And all those severall Messuages or Tenem:ts withthe appurtenances to the said capitall Messuage or Tenem:t called Crosby Place belonging or appurteyning And also the ?Rectory appropriate of S:t Helens in the Ward of Bishopsgate London with the rights members and appertannces therof And all other the Messuages or Tenem:ts of mee the said S:r John Langham in the said Parish of S:t Helens To hold the same Capitall Messuage or Tenem:t & premisses unto the said Stephen Langham my Sonn his Executors & Assignes for and during the Residue of the Terme of my noty (sic) nyne yeares or such other Terme and Estate as I now have in the same

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my said Sonn Stephen Langham the somme of Tenn Thousand pounds of lawfull money of England for and in consideracon of his faithfull and diligent service to mee for Twenty yeares last past And also my coach & horses & all my Plate & householdstuffe which shall be unbequeathed by this my Will or otherwise

ITEM I hereby will and desiremy Executors hereafter named with what convenient speed they may after my decease to see the Agreem:ts betweene S.r Thomas Hussey and my selfe upon his marriage with my Daughter Sarah performed and my said Daughters Joynture perfected

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my grandchildren Ann Butler & Elizabeth Butler two of the daughters of my eldest daughter Elizabeth the XXXXwife of S:r Phillip Butler of XXXX Woodhall in the County of Hereford Knight of the Bath the summe of ffive hundred pounds a piece of lawfull moneyof England (having lately given to Mary the eldest daughter at her Marriage One Thousand Pounds) to be respectively paid the said Ann & Elizabethat their respective ages of Eighteene yeares or daies of Marriage

first happening And if it shall happen that either of them shall dye before the attayning such age or marryage Then the legacy of her so dying shall remaine to the Survivo:r of them And if it shall happen both my said grandchildren shall dye before the said Legacies be respectively payable Then I will and hereby order That the said severall Legacies shall be paid to my Grandchild John Butler their Brother or his Assignes And I doe hereby order my Executors to call in the One Thousand pounds with Interest oweing mee by my said Sonn in Law of S:r Phillip Butler in my said Sonn Stephen Langlands claime to be in readynesse towards payment of the aforesaid Legacies

ITEM I desire my Executrix to take notice of an Agreem:t made with my Sonn in Law S:r Martin ?Lumley Dated on or about the Two and Twentieth day of ffebruary1664 to which I referre them

ITEM my Will and I do hereby order my Executor:s to pay to the proper hands of my Three Daughters the Lady Lumley, the Lady Hussey and M:rs ?Lake respectively the respective summes of Two hundred pounds a piece for their proper and peculiar uses and wherewith their husbands shall not intermeddle and the respective receipts of my s:d Daughters (notwithstanding their coverture) shall be good discharges to my Executors The same Legacies to be paid within Three Moneths next after my decease

ITEM my Will is and I do herby order my Executo:rs yearly and every yeare dureing the naturall life of my said Daughter the Lady Lumley to pay or cause to be paid unto such person or persons only and for such ends intents and purposes onely and in such manner asmy said Daughter Lumley by writing under her hand shall from time to time appoint One Annuall or yearly payment of ffifty pounds of lawfull money of England Att Two usuall ffeasts in the yeare (viz:t) Lady Day and Micheas by equall porccons. The ffirstpayment to be made at such of the said ffeasts as shall first and next happen after my decease The same being intended by mee as a further Provision for a separate maintenance for my said Daughter Lumley wherewith her husband shall not intermeddle

ITEM I give and bequeath to my Brother Edward Langham of Banbury CHECK THIS IS NOT DANBURY ESSEX (as a Remembrance of my Love to him) the summe of ffifty pounds And I remitt my said Brother what he oweth mee upon Bond

ITEM I give and bequeath unto the Children of my kinswoman Mary Barham the Wife of M:r Arthur Barham late Minist:r of S:t Helens London the summe of Two hundred and ffifty pounds of lawfull money of England to be devided betweene them share and share a like and to be paid to them at their respective Ages of Eighteene yearesor daies of Marryage ffirst happening And if any of them shall dye before such age or marryage the Porcon and Porcons of such of them so dying to remaine to the Survivors of them And in the meane time untill such payments I will that my executors shall pay Twenty pounds a yeare towardsw the maintenance of the said Children the said Twenty Pounds p Ann to be paid their ffather (whilst living) by ffive pounds a Quarter for that purpose

ITEM I give and bequeathunto my kinswoman Elizabeth Peirce the wife of M:r Edward Peirce Minister of Cottesbrooke aforesaid the summe of Two hundred pounds of like mony to be deteyned in the hands of my Executors and to be by them paid together with Interest for the same after the rate of ffive pounds p cent p Ann according to the tenor of certaine Articles bearing Date on or about the Seaventeenth day of May 1666 made betweene the said Edward Peirce of th’ one part And my said Sonns S:r James Langham and Stephen Langham of th’ other part

ITEM I give and bequeath unto the Children of my kinswoman Hannah Howard the Wife of Robert Howard, that are unmarrried the summe of ffifty pounds a piece of like money To be paid them at their respective ages of Eighteene yeares or dayes of Marryage first happening And if any of the said Children shall dye before

SUCH age or marryage the Legacy of him or them so dying to be paid the said Robert and Hannah Howard or the Survivor of them

ITEM I give & bequeath unto my kinswoman the Lady Vincent[3] (as a remembrance of my love and respects to her) the summe of Two hundred pounds of like money.

ITEM I give to M:rs Waters my housekeeper the summe of Two hundred pounds to be paid her within Six moneths after my decease whom I have found very faithfull and serviceable to mee Therefore I would have my Children love and respect her the more for my sake

ITEM I give to my old and faithfull servant Lawrence Haddon the house and lands he holds of mee in the Westend of Cottesbrooke for and dureing the terme of his naturall life and fforty pounds in money to be paid him within Six Moneths after my decease

ITEM I give to my servant John Payne of Cottesbrooke the summe of Thirty pounds And to Ann Wilson my cookmaid Twenty pounds And to Richard Wills my Sonn Stephens’ servant Twenty pounds to be paid them within Six Moneths after my decease

ITEM I give to Worship:ll Company of Grocers[4] London of which I am a member The summe of Two hundred pounds of like money towards the payment of the debts oweing by the said Company besides the summe of One hundred pounds by mee formerly given them towards the rebuilding of their hall the same to be paid within Three Moneths aftermy decease

ITEM I give and bequeath unto S:t Bartholomews hospitall ffifty pounds, To S:t Thomas hospitall in Southwark ffifty pounds To the hospitalls of Bridewell and Bethlehem ffifty pounds (viz:t) Twenty ffive pounds a piece desireing my said Legacies to the said ffoure hospitalls may be imployed by the severall Governors of the same as may be most beneficiall for the poore in them And whereas I have caused an hospitall to be built at Cottesbrooke aforesaid and endowed the same with ffifty pounds a yeare out of my Lands at Silberstoft in the said county of Northton for the maintenance of Eight poore people therein as Brothers and Sisters for ever And for Six hundred pounds given and paid to the Towne of Northton settled and assured Thirty Six pounds XXXXX for the maintenance of Six PooreWiddows at S:t Thomas hospitall in the said Towne yearly for ever And for ffive hundred pounds paid the Govern:rs of Christs hospitall London settled Twenty ffive pounds p Anno for the placeing of Six Poore children out of that house yearly for ever in such manner as I have declared in the severall settlements thereof Now I doe by this my Will confirme the said severall settlements and ffoundation of the aforesaid hospitall And I do hereby desire all persons trusted therein to bee very carefull in the performance and due execution thereof for the benefitt of the poore as my Truste is in them And I desire my Executo:rs (as occasion shall require) to looke after the same And whereas I have erected a large ffabrick for a School house and a dwelling house for a Schoole Masterat Guilsborough in the said County of Northton and have by Deeds and Assurances settled a ffree Schoole there and endowed the same out of my Mannor and Lands at Sibbertoft in the same County I do hereby ratify & confirme that settlement with all things thereto relateing and desire my said Sonne S:r James Langham to take care thereof dureing his Life And after his decease That my other Sonns and the rest of the Trustees do take the Care of the same According to the said Settlement and the Constitutions and orders made for the Governm:t thereof

ITEM I give and bequeath for the use of the Poore of S:t Helens London the summe of One hundred pounds to be kept in my Executo:es hands to be by them, the Ministers and Churchwardens of the same Parish for the timebeing distributed to Twenty of the poorest FAMILIES OR Widows of the same Parish of the best name and fame by Twenty Shillings a piece every

S:T THOMAS day for the next ffive yeares after mydecease

ITEM I give to the Poore of S:t Martins Outwich London Twenty Pounds to be distributed by my Executors, the Churchwardens and Overseers for the poore of the said Parish to Twentyof the poorest ffamilies or Widows of the best name and ffame in the same Parish, by tenn shillings a piece every S:t Thomas day for the next ffoure yeares after my decease

ITEM I give and bequeath to M:r Thomas Burroughs my Chaplaine[5] One hundred pounds to be paid him within six moneths after my decease

ITEM I give and bequeath to the Reverend Doctor Horton[6] and his Wife Thirty pounds to buy them mournung.

ITEM I give to the ffoure Master Porters of the Grocers Company, workeing at the Waterside fforty Shillings a piece to be paid them forthwith after my decease

ITEM I give to my kinsman M:r Edward Peirce Minister of Cottesbrooke and his wife Twenty Pounds for Mourningand other service ITEM I have given the summe of ffourty Pounds for the Providing of Two fflagons and one Salver of Silver-plate for the Communion-Table at at Cottesbrooke

ITEM I give to every one of my Poore Tennants at Cottesbrooke, whose yearly Rents exceedeth not ffive pounds One whole yeares rent to be allowed them out of the arrears or growing rent

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my kinswoman Hannah Howard One Annuity or Yearly Rent charge of Tenne pounds for and dureing her naturall life

ITEM I give to her Sonn John Howard one Annuity or yearly rentcharge of Twenty Pounds for the space of Three yeares next after my decease towards his maintenance at the University of Oxon payable Quarterly both which Rent Charges to be issueing and payable out of my Manno:s and lands at Silberstoft

ITEM whereas I intend to give my Sonn S:r James Langham tenn Thousand Pounds for the enabling him to make the ffirst payment of my Grandchild his daughters Porcon And to performe the Articles made upon his Marriage with the Lady Elizabeth Hastings Now in case I shall not have paid the same Tenn Thousand pounds in my Life time I order the same to be paid after my decease And Whereas I have designed Eleaven hundred pounds of lawfull money of England towards the rebuilding of ffoure churches within the Walls of London (viz:t) ffive hundred pounds towards the Rebuilding of S:t Michaels Church in Alderman-Bury, Two hundredand ffifty pounds towards the Rebuilding of S:t Lawrence Church against S:t Lawrence Lane and One hundred pounds towards the Rebuilding of Bow Church in Cheapside part of whichsumme isby mee already paid And I hereby order my Executors to pay such part of the same Eleaven hundred pounds as shall unpaid at the time of my decease where the Churches are begunn to bee bulit immediately and the residue within three moneths after the said otherChurches shallbe begun to be rebuilt The Rest and Residue of all and singular my goods chattells debtsand personall estate (after my debts Legacies and ffunerall charges paid) I give devise and bequeath unto my said Three Sonnes S:r James Langham William Langham and Stephen Langham to be equally devided amongst them share and share alike and I hereby make and ordaine my said Three Sonns S:r James Langham William Langham and Stephen Langham Executors of this my Last Will & Testament And revoke all former Wills by mee made And I do hereby charge my Executors (as they will answer the contrary before God) truely & faithfully in every respect to performe this my last Will and Testament toobserve all other directions and things which I have or shall declare to them by word
