'''William Sowden''' of Plimouth Mariner<br /> master of the shipp the ''Welfare'' of the<br /> said port, aged 36 yeares or thereabouts To the first, second and third Interrogatories hee saith and deposeth that hee<br /> well knewe the shipp interrogated, the ''Expedition'' of Plimouth<br /> whereof George Mathewes was master, at the time of her last<br /> being at the Island of Zant in the Mediteranean seas, and saith<br /> shee departed thence on or about the thirteenth of ffebruary last<br /> past old stile, bound for this port of London and here to make<br /> her dischardge of her lading of Currance. And saith that in her<br /> right course of proceeding from Zant for this said port, comming<br /> about fourtie leagues off the Rock of Lisbone, shee was met<br /> withall and set upon by a man of warr having Holland colours<br /> and about 26 guns, and soe was this deponents said shipp the<br /> ''Welfare'' which came in company of the ''Expedition'', and after<br /> about two howres hott fight betweene the said man of warr (which endeavoured to take them) on<br /> the one part and the ''Expedition'' and the ''Welfare'' on the other<br /> the said shipp the ''Expedition'' being extremely battered<br /> and torne with the fight, sunck with her said lading of currance<br /> downe in the sea and soe shee and her lading were and are utterly<br /> lost, and this hee saith happened on the seaventeenth day<br /> of March last past of the stile aforesaid; All which hee knoweth<br /> because hee this deponent in his said shipp the ''Welfare'' went out<br /> from England the said voyage in company of the ''Expedition'' and<br /> was in her companie at Zant and saw her take in her said<br /> lading, and carrie thence in her companie bound alsoe for this [?port]<br /> and was present and active (as master of the ''Welfare'') in the<br /> said fight and sawe the said shipp ''Expedition'' sincke, and [?doe ?did]<br /> her men in this deponents said shipp, And saith that the<br /> [?boughes] and masts of the enemie (the said man of warr) were alsoe torne<br /> and the shipp very much shattered, soe that shee fell off, and<br /> as this deponent beleeveth shee alsoe afterwards sanck, but this deponent<br /> could not see what became of her by reason the night was come and<br /> that hee quickly lost sight of her.
