Transcription The 5th of September 1655. [CENTRE HEADINGThe 5th of September 1655. [CENTRE HEADING] The claime of the said William}<br /> Belyn for the ''Crosse of Jerusalem''.} Examined upon the foresaid allegation, '''2us.''' '''James Gilbert''' of the parish of Saint Martin Organ<br /> London Merchant, aged 30 yeares or thereabouts<br /> sworne and examined. To the first and second articles of the said allegation hee saith and deposeth<br /> that hee well knoweth the producent William Belyn of Amsterdam<br /> and hath soe donne for theise twelve yeares last past and upwards,<br /> during all which time hee saith the said William hath bin and is<br /> commonly accompted an Inhabitant Burgher of Amsterdam and<br /> a subiect of the States of the United Netherlands, and saith hee<br /> the said William hath bin for severall yeares last and is commonly<br /> accompted a maried man, and to have taken a dutch woman as wife<br /> and to have kept house and familie in the said citie, the premisses<br /> hee deposeth having well knowne the said Belyn before<br /> such his going to livr in Amsterdam, and having for foure or five<br /> yeares last corresponded with him the said Belyn in the way of<br /> merchandize betwixt London where this deponent liveth, and Amsterdam<br /> the place of the said William Belyn his habitation. And otherwise he<br /> cannot depose. To the Interrogatories. [CENTRE HEADING] To the first and second Interrogatories hee saith and deposeth that<br /> hee this deponent was borne at Coural neaare Saint Malo's in ffrance<br /> and hath lived six yeares last and upwards in London, and before that<br /> in Exeter two yeares, and before that all his time in ffrance, and that<br /> hee hath nore relation by kinred or otherwise to the said Belyn<br /> nor hath this deponent any part or share in the shipp in question<br /> or her lading, and saith the said Belyn is of Saint Malo's by birth<br /> and there this deponent well knew him, that being the place where<br /> hee for the most part resided till hee went to Amsterdam, which<br /> was about twelve or fourteene yeares since, at which time there having<br /> bin some falling out betweene him and some other gentlemen of the place<br /> and they setting one night upon him and cutting off the haire of<br /> his head, which was very fairely growne, hee was soe des[?quighted]<br /> therewith that hee presently left the towne, and swore hee would<br /> never come there againe, and soe hath dwelt ever since at Amsterdam<br /> where hee hath prospered very well and is a merchant of good accompt<br /> And otherwise hee cannot depose. To the rest of the Interrogatories hee cannot depose for hee doth<br /> not knowe the shipp the ''Jerusalem's Crosse'' Interrogated. nor any<br /> thing concerning her lading or voyage, and hee referreth himselfe<br /> to his foregoeing deposition.
