Transcription The 14th of October 1656 The claime of ofThe 14th of October 1656 The claime of of Lewes Bakeman}<br /> Zacharias Vandevelde and company}<br /> of fflushing for the freight of the}<br /> shipp the ''Peacock'', Adrian Keene Master} Examined upon an allegation given in on<br /> behalfe of the said claimers 11th of this<br /> instant '''Adrian Keene''' of fflushing Mariner, aged [?XXXX]<br /> yeeres or thereabouts sworne and examined. To the first article of the said allegation hee deposeth that the shipp the<br /> ''Peacock'' arlate was laden at Rochell in ffrance with salt amounting to<br /> eightie lasts or a last or two under or over, and bound for Nieuport in fflanders<br /> and this deponent her master was by speciall contract and agreement to<br /> have for the transportation of the said salt from Rochell to Nieuport [?XXXX]<br /> gilders per last, which was and is the usuall freight and allowance for<br /> the like transportation, and soe much this deponent well deserved to have<br /> Besides hee saith that hee this examinate was to have for a [?XXXX]<br /> for himselfe thirtie gilders, and to have two third parts of all the port<br /> charges allowed, which charges amounteth to sixtie gilders as hee<br /> saith. And further that a gilder is commonly reckoned to be and to<br /> make and amount to two shillings sterling, and soe a hundred gilders to<br /> tenn pounds sterling, and proportionably a greater or lesser summe of gilders<br /> And otherwise hee cannot depose. To the Interrogatories. [CENTRE HEADING] To the first hee answereth that hee hath a 16th part in the said<br /> shipp the ''Peacock'', and is to have his proportionable share of the<br /> freight after payment of wages and charges. To the second hee saith hee kept and tooke account of the salt<br /> which was put aboard the shipp at Rochell, and saith the quantitie<br /> seaven french hundreds of salt lacking a moy and halfe, all amounting<br /> to eightie lasts (Zealand lastes) or thereabouts and otherwise negatively To the 16 third hee saith hee made the accord the for 16 gilders<br /> per last freight, which was to be received at Nieuport, if hee<br /> come thither, and if not, then upon comming to Middleborowe<br /> was to recieve 15 gilders only per last; and saith 16 gilders for<br /> Nieuport is very meane and ordinary freight. To the 4th hee saith that Nieuport is somewhat a shorter passage<br /> from Rochell then Middleborowe, but Nieuport being a dangerous [?harbour]<br /> by reason of sands, the freight is more thither then to Middleborowe<br /> and that dover is shorter passage then either of them, and saith<br /> hee would have had as much freight to dover as to Middleborowe<br /> the mens wages and charges being considered. To the last hee saith hee conceiveth it is even alike proposition<br /> to receive 100 ''li'' sterling in England (which should have bin received at<br /> Nieuport) as to receive it at Nieuport, and saith hee referreth<br /> himselfe to the course of Merchants in the matter interrogate<br /> and otherwise cannot answer./ Adriaen Kien [SIGNATURE, RH SIDE] Repeated before the two Judges in Court.
