Transcription The 17th of October 1653. [CENTRE HEADING]The 17th of October 1653. [CENTRE HEADING] On the behalfe of the State} '''Captaine Christofer Myngs''' Commannder of the<br /> ''Elizabeth frigot'' in the service of this Commonwealth<br /> aged 28 yeares or thereabouts, sworne before the<br /> right Worshipfull William Clerke and John Godolphin<br /> doctors of lawes Judges of the high Court of the Admiraltie<br /> saith and deposeth by vertue of his oath. That on the third of this instant October about foure leagues off dieppe<br /> aout nine of the clocke in the fore noone hee this deponent in the said frigott<br /> ''Elizabeth'' espied twenty foure<br /> saile of shipps, and gave chace unto them, and about two of the clock in the<br /> afternoone came almost up with the hinder most of them, and that the<br /> headmost of the fleete were two holland men of warr (as this deponent afterwards<br /> found) and that the said two holland men of warr were chacing a private<br /> man of warr of dover named Captaine Allington, and with the said [?respective]<br /> fleete had stood about five houres after him:- And that the said two holland<br /> men of warr seeing the said frigot soe neere came up and readie to fall<br /> in with the said fleete convoyed by them, tacked upon her to the [?XXX] of<br /> the said fleete, and being come up there[?with], the said fleete alsoe<br /> tacked. And forth with the said two men of warr being most [?westherly] [?XX]<br /> up with the ''Elizabeth frigot'' and exchanged their broade sides with her<br /> and tacked upon her againe, but by shott from the ''Elizabeth'' [?XXXX]<br /> hurt, they spake one with the other, and soe bore to lea-ward through<br /> their fleete to a third man of warr of their companie, who to that<br /> time being farr to leaward. could not come up to the ingagement<br /> during all which space, hee saith that the said whole fleete of merchant<br /> men which was withn shott of them put abroad noe colours, untill<br /> such time as the ''Elizabeth'' bore in upon and fired on them, and<br /> then some of them put abroad hamburger colours, some Lubeck colours<br /> and some none at all and soe they came by the lea of the ''Elizabeth''<br /> and this deponent commannding their boates aboard secured 18 of their [?masters]<br /> amd manned foure of their vessells, in some of which soure this<br /> deponents men (as they informed him) found the gunns primed and<br /> Linstocke lighted standing by them. The premisses being thus farr<br /> donne, hee saith then the said private man of warr, chaced<br /> as aforesaid by the said two holland man of warr came in, who<br /> after the said vessells were all brought by the lea of the ''Elizabeth''<br /> came to leaward and tooke up two of the boates of the said bessells<br /> as the skippers were therein comming aboard this deponent, and<br /> went and manned the two vessells to which the said boates belonged<br /> which this deponent perceiving, sent his Lieutenant to him to<br /> admonish him to behave himselfe as was befiting towards this<br /> deponents said prizes which had all struck and submitted unto him<br /> this deponent, and to desire his assistance in securing them to the<br /> downes, and to tell him that what should be thought fitting<br /> for such his assistance, hee should bee considered by those that<br /> were in authoritie for such affaires or to that effect<br /> But the names of the said vessells or any of them hee remembreth not<br /> but referreth himselfe to their [?XXX] Examinations taken at dover after this<br /> deponent had brought them into the downes, where twnn of them were<br /> sent by him into dover [?peere]. and the other tenn into the River of Thames (Christpr: Myng[?s] [SIGNATURE, RH SIDE] (Christpr: Myng[?s] [SIGNATURE, RH SIDE]  +
