Transcription from thence with the first good winde whicfrom thence with the first good winde which should happen that the sayd shipp<br /> wsa then of this deponents sight a strong and staunch shipp and hath heard the sayd shipp ''John'' had bin in the sayd Port and fitted with all things necessary to proceede on her intended voyage [#] [# LH MARGIN]<br /> from the 20th of december 1653 or thereabouts The premisses hee<br /> knoweth for that hee this deponent att the same tyme was as aforesayd at the Port<br /> of Weymouth a Mariner and one of the Company of a vessell called the ''Saint John''<br /> ''Baptist'' (which laye alsoe at the sayd Port and was to goe from thence to Saint Malloes in<br /> ffrance,) and was often aboard the sayd shipp the ''John''<br /> and sawe that shee was fitted as aforesayd when this deponent came soe to Weymouth with all things<br /> ready to sett sayle and was a tyte vessell, And further to this article hee cannot<br /> depose saving his subsequent deposition. To the 6th and 7th articles of the sayd allegation hee saith that hee knoweth that on<br /> the sayd 20th day of december 1653 and for some tyme before and after the same the<br /> winde stoode contrary videlicet South South West soe that it served not for a shipp to sayle out of the Port of<br /> WEymouthj westwards and soe continued till about a weeke after this deponents arivall in the ''Saint John Baptist'' at Weymouth and saith that before the winde served for a shipp to sayle from<br /> that Port westwards there came a generall impresse for sea men in the westerne parts of<br /> England to serve in the shipps of this Commonwealth and there laye before<br /> the Port of Weymouth on the 2 or 3 of January 1653 when this deponent arrived there and soe had done as this deponent heard on the sayd 20th of december 1653 and before divers shipps in<br /> the omediate service of this Commonwealth as the ''hector'', the ''hound'', the [?''old''<br /> ''Warwick'', the ''Guinney ffrigott'', the ''Speaker'' and others And saith of his knowledge<br /> the officers of the sayd shipps did after this deponents sayd arrivall at Weymouth impresse diverse sea men both on<br /> shoare and in Merchants shipps to serve the Commonwealth and soe had done before this deponents sayd comming thither as hee heard which presse<br /> continued till about the eighteenth of January 1653 old style during which<br /> tyme the sayd Commonwealths shipps continued in Weymouth Roade) by reason<br /> whereof mist sea men belongeing to shipps lying in that Roade, did forsake<br /> their shipps and leave only two or three of their company on board their shipps and<br /> the rest hidd them selves where they could to avoide pressing, and amongst the rest<br /> the Company of the sayd shipp the ''John'' did of this deponents sight and knowledge all but the boatswaine and an other<br /> forsake her and goe a shoare to hide them selves from being pressed, and this<br /> deponent for his part was pressed by the Officers of the sayd shipps of this Commonwealth<br /> three severall tymes betweene the sayd 20th of december 1653 and 18th of January next<br /> following, but by mediation of grfreinds gott cleare thereof And therefore hee this<br /> deponent well knoweth that a shipp could not have sett out of the Port of Weymouth<br /> from the tyme this deponent arrived there (as hee hath heard not from the sayd 20th of december 1653) till the 18th or 19th of January next after without great<br /> hazard and danger to have all or most of her men taken out of her to serve in the<br /> sayd shipps of this Commonwealth, and saith that the shipp the ''Saint''<br /> ''John Baptist'' of whose company this deponent was one durst not nor did stirr out<br /> from the sayd Port of Weymouth by reason of all the sayd presse untill the 19th day of<br /> January 1653 old style, neither did any other shipps sett sayle out of the sayd<br /> Roade before the sayd 19th day of January (that this deponent knoweth of or<br /> hath heard) by reason of the sayd presse And further to these articles hee cannot<br /> depose Upon the rest of the articles hee is not examined by direction of the producent/ ******************************************************************************* Examined the same day upon the sayd allegation [CENTRE HEADING] '''2''' '''Robert Pilton''' of Burton neere Bredport in<br /> the County of dorset Mariner aged 52 yeares or<br /> thereabouts a witnes sworne and examined saith and<br /> deposeth as followeth videlicet./ To the 5th 6th and 7th articles of the sayd allegation hee saith and deposeththe sayd allegation hee saith and deposeth  +
