''Edward and John'' while shee lay there and having escaped entered<br />
themselves into the service of this Commonwealth to goe for Jamaica<br />
and saith that for that the sayd shipp was not then cleered by the<br />
Customs house officers touching the sayd servants, (nor any freight<br />
then payd for them that hee knoweth of) hee beleeveth the sayd shipps<br />
Company was not chargeable with the sayd servants but saith the<br />
sayd shipps Company and amongst other this deponent told him that<br />
the sayd Totty that if sayd servants soe escaped were<br />
put upon the shipps Companyes Accompt to make satisfaction for<br />
them hee and they told him they would not proceede on the voyage and<br />
the sayd Totty answered that hee would make satisfaction for them himselfe<br />
for that hee had fower other servants on board who had noe master<br />
which hee would dispose of to the sayd Cooper if any trouble<br />
arise about their Escape or hee spake words to that effect, And<br />
hee saith hee was present with the sayd Totty and sawe the arlate<br />
Generall Sedgewick give the sayd Totty a noate under his hand<br />
for his discharge touching these servants expressing that they were<br />
under his Command in the States service And further to this article<br />
hee cannot depose./

and County of Middlesex Mariner aged thirty yeares and<br />
upwards a wittnesse sworne and examined saith and deposeth<br />
as following videlicet./
To the first article of the sayd allogation hee saith that the arlate huggerly<br />
and Company Mariners of the ''Edward and John'' did enter into whole [?pay GUTTER]<br />
for their service aboard the sayd shipp the second of June 1656 and [?continued GUTTER]<br />
on board in service thereof untill the two and twetieth day of July 1656<br />
during that tyme did doe such service therein as was fitt and usuall for<br />
to doe for preservation of the sayd shipp and her ladeing on board her and<br />
the sayd Tottie desyred them to doe this hee deposeth being one of her company. And further hee cannot to this article depose
