'''2''' '''William Croford''' of the parish of Saint Mary<br /> Magdalen Bermondsey, Master of the shipp the<br /> ''Gilbert'', aged about 39 yeeres, a wittnes produced<br /> sworne and examined deposeth as followeth videlicet To the first article of the sayd allegation he deposeth and<br /> saith that the arlate shipp the ''Gilbert'' was bound in the<br /> last voyage (which is the voyage arlate) from this port of<br /> London unto the Barbadoes, and thense to London again,<br /> And that the same was very well knowne unto the<br /> Plaintiffs in this cause for that they were hyred for<br /> That and noe other voyage, namely to discharge their<br /> her inward bound lading her (sic) at London and he saith<br /> that all the bills of the sayd shipps homeward bound lading were signed<br /> for London and noe other place, And further he<br /> cannot depose. To the second article of the sayd allegation he deposeth that<br /> in the arlate shipp hee cometh for this post of London from<br /> the Barbadoes she came to an anchor of Aberdaugh<br /> in Wales on or about the eighteenth day of January 1656<br /> and that the wind was then Easterly, and that when the<br /> sayd shipp came soe to an anchor the weather was thick<br /> and foggy, and that about fower or five hours after<br /> the weather clearing up and the wind continueing easterly he this deponent called unto the<br /> Mariners and bad them to weigh anchor, telling them<br /> that they showld sayle for Milford, he this deponent<br /> intending upon the first opportunity of wine from from thense<br /> to have sayled for London, which would have bin but a<br /> short and easie runne from thense, And he deposeth<br /> that notwithstanding his sayd order or command the maior<br /> part of the Mariners of the sayd shipp told him this<br /> deponent and swore that they would not touch a rope except<br /> he this deponent would goe for Bristow, and they persisting<br /> (notwithstanding all the perswasions and reasons that he this<br /> deponent used) in their mutiny and tumult, he this deponent<br /> was forced to sayle for Bristoll, otherwise shipp and<br /> goods might have perished, for that the place she rode in<br /> nigh Aberdaugh would have bin a dangerous place if it<br /> had blowne, and soe have endangered all, And he saith that<br /> the principall of the said shipps Company, who would not oney<br /> this deponents comand were the arlate Cobb, Tanner, Gillett, [AXX GUTTER]<br /> Parsley, Sanders, Chipsey, Cavelleir, Mudgett and Woodf[all GUTTER]<br /> in all to the number of about 24 And further he<br /> cannot depose.
