'''William Avery''' of Poplar Victualer, late<br /> one of the Company of the ship the ''Mary''<br /> (Robert Clarke Comander) aged 46 yeeres or<br /> thereabouts sworne as aforesaid saith by vertue<br /> of his Oath as followeth./. That hee well knoweth John Sutherne late one of the Company<br /> of the said ship the ''Mary'', and served with him severall<br /> monthes on board the said ship ''Mary'' before the said Suthernes death's (sic)<br /> and saith that about three months before the said Sutherlands death this deponent severall times sawe Thomas<br /> [?Stocke] the Boatswaines mate of the said ship, strike the<br /> said Sutherne with a small Cane that hee used to weare<br /> about his rist, onboard the said ship; but saith that to his<br /> knowledge hee never sawe the said Stocke any other way<br /> strike or abuse the said Sutherne, And saith that about<br /> halfe a yeere since the said Sutherne departed this life<br /> but what was the occasion of his death, hee saith hee<br /> knoweth not.
