Biographical synthesis

Milnern Mugford (alt. Milner Muckford) (b. ca. 1623; d. ?). Mariner.

Gunner of the ship the Robuck in 1649, when she was seized at Lisbon by Prince Rupert.[1]

Gunner of the ship the Elizabeth and John on a disputed voyage in 1651.[2]

Resident in 1654 and 1655 in the parish of Saint Giles without Cripplegate. In 1655, Mugford said of Saint Giles without Cripplegate that it was "where he hath lived about two years past".[3]

Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

Thirty-two year old Milner Mugford deposed on March 22nd 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation in the case of "Stanton against Rich".[4]

Milner Mugford stated that the ship the Elizabeth and John ws fitted out in 1651 for a warlike voyage with sufficient provisions for three months. She was manned with a crew of one hundred and forty. Three commissions were provided by Robert Rich to the master Captaine Stanton - one gainst the United Provinces, one against France, and the last against the enemies of the English Commonwealth.[5]

Thirty-two year old Milner Mugford (wriiten Milton Muckford by the Court notary) deposed on August 15th 1654 in the High Court of Admiralty. He described himself as "late gunner of the said ship the Robuck, and gave his residence still as the parish of Saint Giles Cripplegate. The case refers to the seizure in 1649 of the Robuck by Pricne Rupert at Lisbon.[6]
