Abstract & context
John White, merchant of Oporto, was the brother of both Thomas and Stephen White (alias Whyte) [junior]. Thomas, like Thomas, was a resident of Oporto, whereas Stephen was a resident of London. John and Thomas were self-declared kinsmen of Sir Stephen White. All four were merchants, with John and Thomas both living in Oporto, Portugal.
John White was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Maynard, brother of the English consul of Oporto, Walter Maynard.[1]
John and Thomas were most probably living in the same house in Oporto, since in their wills they both mention their servants Isabell Ferreira and Grigorio da Costa, and their English servant Thomas Rowe. They may well have been commercial partners together in Oporto, working with Sir Stephen White and with Stephen White [junior] in London. However, no documentation has survived of their commercial activities.
Thomas White made his will on April 15th, 1673, and acknowleged in his will that he was dying. John White was his principal heir and executor. Although John White's will was made in May 1672 when healthy, it was opened by the English consul in Oporto on May 14th 1673, showing that the two brothers died within weeks of each other. Both wills were proved in London that summer within days of each other.

In the name of God Amen, I John White of Porto English Merchant beinge in good health and by the Grace of God injoying my perfect xxxxx doe make this my last will and testament wherein I doe Bequeath my soule to God my creator Jesus Christ my Redeemer and to the Holy Ghost my sanctifier beging pardon for all my most heinous sins, and Offences, and doe comitt my Body into the Earth in hopes of A Joyful and glorious Resurrection Amen
IMPRIMIS to the most necessitated People the Poore of this Parish of Saint Nicholas the sume of Fifteene MilRs which sume shall be paid by my Executor his order unto this curator of said Parish to distribute the same
ITEM I doe give unto the poore of belonginge unto the Parish of the sea Church of this Citty the summe of of tenne MilRs to be distributed by the Curator of this said Parrish

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my most deare and loveinge wife Mrs Eliz:a White the one halfe of my Reall and Personell Estate as Goods Chattels Shipps moneys wares householdstuffe and Jewells debts that is and shall be found belonguinge unto me as may Appeare per Inventory to be made per my Executor imediately on my departure of this life who I request forthwith to make upp all Accompts belonginge either to my selfe or Correspondents and having recovered then to pay all debts lawfully demanded and with all the greatest speed that possible canne bee and then the one halfe parte of my liquid Estateto be made good unto my deare wife aforesaid with Provision that what yit unpaid of the Fower Thousand crownes yit oweinge on her portion to be made good by her father Thomas Maynard Esquire and Mr Walter Maynard of Oporto Counsell who xxxx oblidged to compleate the same this Twenty Fifth day of December next xxx infernio in the yeare of our Lord one Thousand Six hundred and seaventie and Two and such of doe declare that this aforesaid summe or summes be made good unto my Executor haveinge full power in this my last will and testament to receive the same And I doe thereby request Mr Nicholas Pollixfen English Merchant now resident in the Citty of Lixa [I think this is correct - guess that this is Lisbon] to receive and take into his possession All such summe or summes of mo:s as may or shall Appeare to be the proper due of my deare and loveinge wife aforesaid and as shall Appeare by the Accompts of my Executor who I request and order by this my last will and testament to remitt unto ye said summes as shall be in cash xr:a

ITEM I doe hereby constitute and Authorize as my true and Lawfull Administrator of this my last Will and Testament for the management of all my affaires, that att prsent are or may hereafter concerne me or any of my correspondences my worthy and well loved Freind M:r Walter Massan English merchant now resident in this Citty of Oporto to return
AND pay and Ajust all Accompts that is betweene myselfe and all persons whatsoever, Recoverigne and payain all debts duely and lawfully demanded and haveinge recovered all debts Goods Chattels Shipps moenys Plait Jewells the Inventory shall Appeare to dispose there of as before mentioned and I doo hereby Authorise my aforesaid Executor to Imprison (sic) and Release all person or personsthat may have any contentous [?] with mee and his Acquittance shall be their sufficient discharge, and I request my Executor to pay all such Summes or Summe as I have in this my last Will and Testament declared, and I request my honored Friend Mr Nicholas Travanyon of this Citty English Merchant to assist my Executor to the I say Already [?] complyance of this my last Will and Testament xr.

"[1673] June 10. Whitehall. The King to Consul Maynard and to Francis Parry, Resident in Portugal, respectively. Recommending to them Stephen White, brother and adminstrator of John White of Oporto, merchant, deceased, that they may assist him in getting in and settling the estate of his said deceased brother, the treaty with Portugal leaving the administration of the estates of English subjects dying there to be according to the laws and customs of England.
