Abstract & context


Richard Turgis made his will on XXX, when " at this p:rsent sicke and weak." He described himself as "Cittizen and Grocer of London."

He instructed that he "be buried in the Ruines of the Church of S:t Mary Woolnoth in Lumbard Streete as neere my late wife as possible may bee And my Will is that I may bee buried by Torchlight and that no other service shalbe given to those that attend my Buriall but Rosemary Biscakes and Burnt Wine."

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I Richard Turgis Cittizen and Grocer of London being at this p:rsent sicke and weak but of sound and Competent mind and memory (blessed bee God, yet considering the uncertaine Estate of this Transitory life doe make and ordayne this my last Will and Testament in manner as followeth That is to say

FIRST I commend my Soule into the hands of Almighty God that gave it mee hopinge through his mercy and the meritts of Jesus Christ my Redeemer to have pardon of all my Sinnes and bee eternally saved And my Body I committ to the Earth from whence it came To be buried in the Ruines of the Church of S:t Mary Woolnoth in Lumbard Streete as neere my late wife as possible may bee And my Will is that I may bee buried by Torchlight and that no other service shalbe given to those that attend my Buriall but Rosemary Biscakes and Burnt Wine

And as touching my Temporall Estate goods and Chattells which the Lord hath been pleased to bestowe upon mee for my Porcon In this life I will appoint and dispose of the same as followeth

IMPRIMIS I give and bequeath Richard my Sonne what my little Cabbinett and my Studdie of Bookes my Diamond Ringe

which I commonly weare upon my finger with all his one plate and his late Mothers single stone Ringe

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Anne My beste Necklace of Pearle now in the keeping of my Mother ?Davis and the best dyamond Ringe of her late Mothers

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth my wifes worst necklace and her Rose Ringe

ITEM I give unto my sonne Luke his late Mothers Watch And I give bequeath unto my daughter Priscilla the Brassletts that were her Mothers and the Luinen (sic) that lyes in my Trunke at Milend

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my Sonne Luke the sume of one hundred pounds with the Interest therefore due from my Mother in Law M:rs Cropley which shee promised mee in marriage with her daughter

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my daughter Priscilla the sume of Seaventy pounds due to mee from her Grandmother as aforesaid Item I give and bequeath unto my Loveing Brother Edward Turgis and to his wife sufficient cloth for Mourning And I give unto Thomas Turgis Esq and Mary his wife sufficient Cloth for Mourning Item I give and bequeath unto M:rs Anne Davis and to M:rs Cropley My two Mothers in Lawes (sic) and to my Deare and Loveing friend M:rs Hester Brett cloth for Mourning And alsoe I give and bequeath unto all my children complied and sufficient Mourning

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my very Loveing friend M:r Deputy Jefferyes Twenty shillings for a Ringe

ITEM I give unto my Loveing friend M:r Henry Tulse Esquire and M:r John Kirke Twenty shillings a peece for Rings to weare in Remembrance of mee And alsoe I give and bequeath unto my Loveing friends M:r John Carleton and to his wife, to M:r Brett to M:r Thomas Morton Senior and to his Wife, and to M:r Thomas Morton Junior and to his wife my Loveing friends M:r John Clutterbucke Twenty shillings a peece for Rings

ITEM I give to to M:r John Gurney To M:r Samuell Symons Xxxxx and to M:r Zachary Burroughs and to his wife alsoe Twenty shillings a peece for Rings

ITEM I give and bequeath unto my Aunt M:rs Elizabeth Park [??] the sume of Three pounds in money

ITEM I give to M:r Ellin Barton fforty shillings in Money And to Lamb the Porter Twenty shillings and doe appoint him to bee one of my Bearers ITEM I give and bequeath unto my Sonne Richard my Picture in Gold

ITEM I give and bequeath unto M:rs Priscilla Jeffereys the wife of Robart Jefferyes Twenty shillings for a Ringe

ITEM I give unto M:r Luke Cropley and M:r Beinamin Cropley my Brothers in Lawes Twenty shillings a peece for Rings And I give unto M:r Roger Davis my Brother in Law Twenty shillings for a Ring.

ITEM I give unto Cap:t Thomas Xassinden my speciall friend and to M:r John Snagg of Xentworth in Sussex Tenn shillings a peece for Rings

ITEM I give unto my Brothers George Mellnish and William Mellnish the sume of Twenty shillings a peece for Rings

ITEM I give unto my Brother Edward Turgis his five children Tenn shillings a piece for Rings And I give and bequeath unto the Poore of the Parish of S:t Mary Woolnoth The sume of Three pounds And All the rest and residue of my Goods Chattells debts plate Monyes and Estate Whatsoever My debts Legacies and ffunerall charges being first borne paid and deducted I give will and bequeath unto my said five children Richard Anne Elizabeth Luke and Priscilla equally amongst them (That is to say to every person of them an equall share And I make nominate & appoint my said Loveing Brother (sic) Edward Turgis and Thomas Turgis Esq full and sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament And I doe Entriat nominate and appoint the said Robert Jeffryes John Kirke and Henry Tulse as overseers thereof And doe devise them to bee Assistant to my said Executors in the Execution thereof And my Will and mind is that the Porcons hereby given unto my said children shalbe paid unto them

According to the Custome of the Citty (That is to say) To my sonnes at their severall ages of One and Twenty yeares, and to my said Daughters at their severall Ages of One and Twenty yeares of Dayes of marriage (which shall first happen And that if any of my said Children shall die and depart this life before his or her said porcon shalbe soe paiable the same shalbe and remaine to all my said Children which shall survive equally amongst them And I doe hereby revoke all former Wills In testimony whereof I the said Richard Turgis have to this my last Will and Testament sett my hand and Seale The One and Twentieth Day of March In the years of our Lord God One Thousand Six hundred Sixty and Seaven
