Biographical synthesis

William Evans (b. ca. 1623; d. ?). Mariner.

Resident in 1655 in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

Thirty-two year old William Evans deposed on February 3rd 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation on behalf of Rice and company in the case "Richard Rice James Cole and companie against the shipp called the Charity of which Robert Harrigate was Master and against George Grigg et cetera".[1]

The case concerned the ship the Charity which had been taken as a Scottish prize and brought to Newcastle in 1651. The ship was sold at public auction in Newcastle upon Tyne to Robert Harrigate, her master, and to a number of Newcastle inhabitants - Richard Rice, James Cole, Garrett Starkey, Robert Cooke, Miles Barnes and companie." William Evans was with the ship in 1652 at Falmouth, leaving her shortly before she sailed for Wexford in Ireland. Allegedly the ship was then taken by a Dutch vessel carrying no commission.[2]
